PS3, bad drive game error

I have recently purchased a ps3 with a dead laser. Sadly it was on firmware 3.42. Anyway that being said I just decided I would upgrade to 3.50 to download my games that i previously bought and try them.

One problem when I launch any game from psn it just goes to a black screen and ps button does nothing. Now I am no expert but does this have to do with the blu ray drive not being calibrated correctly?

The guy I bought it from had taken the laser out and it seemed not done correctly because it said there was a disc in (blue light) when there wasnt. So I went in and put the laser back on the rails and hooked it up. (this is an 80gb model, wanted to also see if it played ps2 games) and tried to re-calibrate the disc mechanism.

Once I turned it on and tried to put a disc in, i heard a large snap sound and there is now a white piece of plastic blocking me from inserting a disc and the blue light is no longer on. Is this what is preventing me from launching psn titles?

Edit: Cannot even run Playstation Home...Just goes to black screen.

It sounds as if the daughter board on the Bluray drive is dead and will not allow you to play anything even off the hard drive. Hope it was not too expensive as it sounds as though it cannot even be used for streaming media (Have you tried to stream a movie from a PC with it) If it comes up with corrupt data I think it is a paper weight unfortunately!

As far as the drive not letting you put a disk in. It's put together wrong.

Take it apart, set it up like there is no disk in (the left side should be pushed all the way back, the right side should be up.

If the black top to the drive gives you any problems at all when putting it back together, then there is something out of alignment. Play with it until you get it right (could be anything from a gear not being back far enough, or the boomerage being off track). It's an easy fix once you get the hang of it, but it's just something you'll learn from experience.

For the black screen when booting the game, try going to safe mode and doing a database and file system restore. If that doesn't work, restore the entire system just incase there's some bad files on the system.

I honeslty don't think the two issues are related.

Streaming movies works, I can also go on the PS store. I can send and receive messages. As far as the tray goes, I keep messing with it and hopefully sometime soon I will get it.
