ps3 40 gb freezing up just over a year old
ps3 40 gb freezing up just over a year old –

Ok I need a little input from some of you ps3 guru's. LOL My neighbors son brought his console to me and said it kept freezing up on him. I blew the dust out of it with an air line and the only way I could get it to start up was to put it into service mode. I did that and restore the ps3 system and it worked for a while but then it froze up again. I took the top of the console and had to put it into service mode again to get it running. It ran good as long as I did not play a game. It seems to me like when it heats up it then freezes. What would cause this issue as I am not really sure. I was told by one guy it could be the fan and then another said it needed a reflow. I thought I would ask here to see what you guys think the best path for me to take is. Thank you kindly for any help with this issue.

40 GB models haven't been in production since 2008. This is clearly a dying console. Only reflow can HELP. It may ran a year, but that's pretty much it.

You got to be kidding me. So you are saying there is no doubt that it positively needs a reflow? Oh and sorry dude that just aint going to happen as the console belongs to my neighbors son. I came to get some help here not to start a parts sell department. LOL

Hate to say it but older PS3's the fat models are like 90% shit man. I have been through two 40gb models and three 60gb models all needed reballing. And a PS3 going to crap is like a bad case of herpes, you can treat it and clear up the symptoms but it is going to come back and bite you in the ass. I hate to say it but both Sony and Microjunk blew it with their first models of this generations consoles. I suggest a reball and not a reflow as I reflow might last 2-4 months tops and it can only be done twice before the board is toasted. Once you reball it sell it and go get a slim PS3 as even the new model slim 360's still overheat

This 40gb is the newer one and is only like just over a year old. Do you mean by the older fat models any of them? I have an 80 gb that I upgraded to a 500 gb and I bought it refurbished off of ebay and have never had the first problem with it at all. I do have one more question for you. Why is my older 80 gb model which also plays ps2 games so much heavier than this newer 40 gb model that does not play the ps2 games? If I did want to have someone reball it what is a good price and do you have any advice on who to get it done by? I live in Florida so it would need to be someone in the states for sure. Thanks guys for your help with this, and if the reball is to much money then maybe I will just do a reflow for the guy and have him take it to gamestop immediately and trade it in on a slim model.

Don't know anyone that does reballs but I do know a guy yo reflow it. And I have not had any luck (nor any of my friends) with the phat models lasting the test of time. My last 60gb model had less than 100 hours of gameplay before it went YLOD. I had it in a closet for two years just chilling. Then I got it out about the time jailbreaking came out and it went tits up and that was my second 60gb model. I will admit that both my 40gb models were bought used and one the laser and logic board went out and the other gave a YLOD after an update so it is trash as well.
The reason your 80gb is heavier is that it has more hardware inside the deck for the emulation of PS2 games. They aren't as heavy as the full hardware emulation 60gb models but damn close. Also the 40gb models have a lower wattage PSU and it lighter itself. Most of the phat PS3 owners I know installed the 40gb PSU as it is lower watts and produces less heat. It is also a lot lighter than the solid steel of the 60gb models. Never seen the 80gb model in person just know that one is black, the 60gb is steel colored and the 40gb model is white.
If you get it reflows gamestop will not take it as the warranty seal will be gone. The seal must be intact or they will not take it. So I suggest to reflow it and sell it on eBay and make sure you put it has been refurbished as if you don't and it goes tits up again within 45 days someone could do a chargeback and get the cash directly from your bank account. I have seen it happen before so best to be honest and take a small hit on the resell value as it be stuck with it again broken.

Problem solved easily with warranty sticker. I found them on ebay 100 of them for 8.50 us and free shipping so the way I see it is what gamestop don't know won't hurt them and will help him trade in his console. I have sent many 360 consoles back for repair to microsoft with warranty stickers that I purchased and replaced. What are your thoughts on that. I mean if there is a sticker on the console and it runs what can they do but trade it for you. Oh and thank you very much for taken the time to explain about the weight differences in the consoles.

I have already run it through service mode a couple times and restored the ps3 files and system with no luck at all. I did get it to run for a while with the cover off but once I inserted the game a played it for 10 minutes or so it froze again and then you cannot turn it off with the switch and in order to get it back on you have to go through the service mode routine all over again as it shuts off every time you try to turn it on. How would you check the temp on it with it opened up like you were saying? Thanks but I am fairly sure it is a hardware issue but not 100% positive.

@ atreyu187's you obviously have no clue what you are talking about.
you must treat your ps3s like shit. ive got bought a refrub 60gb that had a bad drive. And have had no problems with mine in the past 2 years. And i can play 8+ at a time. And fyi 80 and 60 are almost identical and they way the same. just send it into gopher mods and they will fix it for you and give you like a 1yr warrenty.
