I was wondering if any of you lovely people would be kind enough to link me to a tutorial on how to fit a 3.5 drive into my ps3, im aware you need to take the cage out that houses the original drive.

I've backed up my hdd through ftp and the official backup utility =]

    Thankyou

    wouldn't it be easier to:
    a) use long cables and leave don't mod anything
    b) use USB HDD

There is no chance to fit a 3,5 inch drive inside a PS3.
There is a possibility to install a 2,5" inch with 12,5mm tough.

You can use a Hard Drive Extender(doesn't fit slim model). Its a 3.5" hard drive adapter.

    I'm using a HDXT (http://www.consolesource.com/ecomm/c...er-p-2593.html).

It was $15 a month ago...

Whats the hardware specs (HDD size) and if your JB'ing your PS3, do you have any problems with file format for your game backups?

I plan on doing the same so I am trying to get an idea of how it works and if I can avoid any problems.

No chance, fitting it inside is not the problem. I've tried to put a 3.5 on my laptop and it didn't work.
Same thing goes to the ps3, the 2.5 hdd needs less power than the 3.5 and it will not power it up no matter what you do. If the ps3 had 3.5 hdd, replacing it with a 2.5 hdd would work fine, but not viceversa.

And still there might be a chance if you open your source and do your manual modding, but I wouldn't recommend that if you're not an expert

I put a 3.5" hard drive into my jtagged xbox 360 (well, not exactly inside). All it needed was a 12v line soldered into the extender cable. Very easy to do.

    1) You want this cable
    amazon.com/LK-13815-22-pin-Female-Power-Extension/dp/B003WSQVSM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1286096011&sr =1-2 - ~$5

    2) Find a 12v power supply from an external enclosure. Snip the yellow wire on the cable and solder into it (going to the hard drive). People get scared of solder, but really there's nothing to this. You can splice it I guess if you're feeling lazy.

    3) Done

Alternatively you may be able to get 12v from the ps3 itself, but it's up to you to rip it apart and find a stable 12v line. I did this with my 360, but I know nothing about the PS3 so I'm keeping it in one piece. Also, I hate using a multimeter.

I know it's ugly, but here's a gallery of my 360 job. The PS3 I just paid the extra dollar on a 640gb.

I did move the internal drive outside the PS3 with a sata+power extension cable .... however my 60gb fat ps3 did not provide the needed 12 volts to power a 3.5" drive ...

Yo can however pull a wire from the 12 volt PSU connector on the mainboard and make ik work ... the ps3 can handle the power no prob....

see attached pics... i have a 1 TB drive on there (which is max)
