PlayStation 3 has been giving tough times to owners lately and we hope you recollect the issues faced after updating to 3.00 firmware. Now, a discussion thread about the firmware 3.10 crashing Blu-ray drives of PS3 consoles is catching everybody's attention.

PlayStation 3 official forum members have cited the firmware 3.10 update bearing PS3 freezes while playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Many other members have reported similar freezing issues with other games too. Basically, the game disc on the Blu-ray drives gets affected. For some PS3 owners, the optical drive won't read disc after freeze occurs.

Just like the firmware 3.00 update, the PlayStation 3 owners suffer game freezes yet again. Yeh sure, Xbox 360 owners who were Red Ring of Death victims can now smirk on these PS3 freezing victims. Apparently, the issue has something to do with the firmware update or the Blu-ray drive itself.

Have you been facing any such issues or different issues after firmware 3.10 or higher update? Leave us a comment and let us know.

Ever time there is major firmware update, or major game release, people claim the firmware killed their drive, or this game or that game killed their drive.

Problem is the Blu-Ray laser is much like the old-fashion lightblubs (before the new ones, and long life ones), you never know when it just going to burn out.

But I find in my repair business the Blu-Ray lasers last no more then 24 months, and some as little as 18 months, if you are using your PS3 ever day for a few hours or more.

There is some freezing issues with v3.10, that is why v3.15 is now needed, but also I found some people leave the game FROZEN for a long time like 20 minutes, which does NOT help the life of the laser if is on its last door stop.

In all cases I have seen of these machines, which numbers between 10 to 15 machines a week, replacing the laser with a new one returns the machine back to life with no problems, using the existing firmware and games it was running.

This just happened to me last week on my 60gb ntsc us ps3(fw 3.15) while playing god of war collection. the game froze the ps3, which then had to be turned off with the main power switch. After the reboot, blu-ray discs will not work, only ps1 and ps2. Lucky for me I bought a spare blu ray laser and assembly about 2 months after buying the ps3 just to be safe(because I knew what WILL happen eventually). Swapped the lasers and I'm good to go again until the next time.....

Its a shame they just don't make things to last anymore, that's just as bad as Microsoft's and there broken solder balls, sure lenses are easy enough to change out without much specal equeptment but still not something most people know how to do

i went to check out the source thread over at playstation.com to get a better glimpse of what this ruckus is all about.

i've been having all of the same freezing issues (mostly while web browsing) and they started happenning with MW2 & fw 3.00. i had to restart my console occassionally by pressing the PS button or with power button a few times.

i really luv my PS3 and i can't believe that sony would allow a firmware (software) to ruin one of the most expensive pieces of the console. i wonder if i could sell my console for like $200 and throw in an extra $120 to get a slim. most BD lasers sell for $80 with shipping on ebay or mrmodchips.uk.co

^upgrade to 3.15 if your really worried, also the lens assembly like this goes for around $50-$60 shipped rather than 80 on ebay that's for new used is cheaper.

@garyopa , can you buy just the blue-ray laser lens rather than the hole thing and if so where would one go about looking for one and how hard are they to put in?

Normally, I just buy the laser itself which is what you pictured above, the 400a laser, it is whole block of little hardware, and prices range from $50 to $80 depending on the source.

It is not hard to install, just open up the drive, remove two clips holding the rail on the gear side, lift up the laser, remove the white gear grabbing clip, screw it onto the new laser, replace it back in with the rail, replace the two clips to secure the rail, reassembly the drive.

Somepeople, buy the whole assembly, with the two rails, laser, and drive motor, but that is rarely needed, only see two cases, one the motor was burned also (you could not freely spin it with your hands), and the other someone had remove the small glued in adjusted screws under the two rails.
