Quick ?
In all the reading on the PS3 I have done. I've yet to find anything on online play for PS2 games through the PS3. Is it possible?
Short answer, Yes online play for ps2 games works fine for the most part.
Long answer:
I have installed, updated and played FFXI.
I have also updated and played SOCOM Combined Assault.
I don't know if you have a specific game in mind but they have been working out most if not all of the bugs on backwards compatability for a good portion of the games.
At launch somewhere around 200 titles, far less than 10% of all previous titles for ps2 or ps1 had problems running on the ps3 and they patched a few of those problems already through firmware updates or downloadable patches (FFXI for example).
If a specific title doesn't run then I am sure if you check the forums at playstation(dot)com you might find that someone has already posted regarding the fact that it doesn't work. If not then you might just be special and have to take up the cause for your title that just doesn't work and let sony know so they can put out a fix for it.

The same configuration is required for your ps2 games to be able to use the network adapter in the ps3 as it is on the ps2. What I mean by this is that you will have to have a valid ps2 memory card inserted into one of the slots on the ps2 with a valid network configuration so that the games know how to get online.
The difference being here that the ps2 is technically a virtual machine being run on top of the ps3 platform so you will need to assign a "virtual" memory card (formatted segment of the ps3 hard drive that emulates a memory card for ps1 or ps2) "plugged in" to the "virtual" ps2.
Then using your online capable title of your choice for the first time, use the utility for configuring network connection. Setup the same config that you used on your ps2.
Now, if you know what you are doing and can access the files on your memory card for your ps2 that had the network conifg and saves for your title, you can copy those onto the ps2 emulated memory card on the ps3 and your ps2 title will not even know the difference. NOTE: This method requires the usage of the memcard-to-USB adapter for ps3 OR a memory card exploit/file transfer tool to get the files off the ps2 memory card and onto a storage medium such as a USB flash or SD card to then load it onto the PS3. Search the PS2 forums here for file transfer methods, exploits etc.. for more info.

If you have any further questions I will try to answer them.

Thanks... very good to know.
Just was wondering. My nephew has a PS3 and was asking about playing some ps2 games with me now that he has an internet connection for the ps3.
That is correct. The SOCOM 3 and SOCOM CA online servers all accept connections from the PS3 seamlessly.
this might be pretty stupid question but does FFXI have a monthly fee? and do they still require a cd to play or can u play them directly from the ps3
Yes, there is a monthly fee for ffxi, and as for the disc being required to play on th ps3, not sure, but more than likely yes.
