Hi all, new to the forums

I've just installed CFW 3.55 kmeaw and was wondering if it was possible to play PS2 and PS1 games, both original and backups. I haven't used my PS3 at all except for MGS4 (which is why I bought it), but being able to play some old classics on it would be fantastic. An added plus would be if I could upload them to the HD on the PS3.

Sorry if this has been answered before. I tried searching the forums but to no avail.

You should be able to find the info you need here

    PlayStation 3 Secrets

This will tell you if you have a backwards compatible PS3 which will play origional PS1 and PS2 games for you region. You can also load PS2 iso's via mulitiman but you need jailbreak or CFW to use this.

There is an emulator if you don't have a backwards compatible console but i don't know how good it is and you need jailbreak or CFW to install it.

Sorry I should have mentioned; I have a slim PS3. I also run CFW, 3.55 kmeaw to be exact. The PSX emulator is unfortunately not signed for 3.55 from what I can gather.

Anyway, does this mean that I have to play my PSX games through the emulator, and I can just forget about PS2 games unless someone ports PCSX2?

as far as i know u still need a ps3 with BC support to play PS2 backups. An emulator might change that someday.

multiman had experimental support for ps2 backups but it never actually worked.

and AFAIK all ps3's have ps1 backwards compatibility, even slims.

ps2 emulation on ps3's that don't already have ps2 emulation is simply near impossible to implement. the ps3 has never had a fully software ps2 emulator. the first ps3 had both the cpu and gpu from the ps2 and the "software" emulator ps3's had just the gpu while the cpu was emulated by software.

a "port" of pcsx2 is pretty much out of the question for any "playable" emulation. the cell and rsx are not powerful enough to emulate on their own.

Alright, so PS2 is out of the question. Would it be possible to run PS1 games from the HD? What about backups on CDR?

im sure there is some way to utilize the ps3's emulator and possibly "mount" an iso or game folder just like we do with ps3 backups. i really dont know at all tho. but that seems like the only reasonable way to do it.

    there is a different non-sony ps1 emulator called "ps3sx". it's source is here http://code.google.com/p/ps3sx/

i tried to get it to work and it refused to load though. thats another way of doing it.

Isn't that because it is not signed for use with 3.55? As far as I understand it seems that each app have to be signed for use with a firmware version...?
