Problem with Control Board?
Problem with Control Board? –
10-12-2010,09:44 PM
40GB Fat PS3; Original issue was that the drive would accept discs, but would not spin them, XMB would indicate in the upper right of the screen that it was scanning the disc. Not 100% sure if the laser lit up.
I replaced the entire deck and laser assembly; same problem but I have seen the laser assembly light up.
The only thing I would presume next is that it's the control board. Does anyone have any experience with this error, resolving it, or repairing control boards that can give some advice?
Thanks in advance!!

Double checked original laser, it was indeed dead. However, using a good laser, the disc still does not spin up, tested on two different decks.
More and more I'm beginning to think it's the control board....
Anyone?

I had the same problem, the disc was dragging and would not spin, had to replace the entire drive. It was a 410 model drive. If you leave the cog/magnet off does the disc attempt to spin?

Thanks, Fringle!
You've got me onto something here.... A couple problems were found
First, the metal arm on the bottom that activates the left and right arms of the drive, that raise the laser into reading level, was out of its track. That's fixed now.
Now, I can insert a disc into the drive, laser comes up to read but no spin WITH the madnet in place.
WITHOUT the magnet in place, the motor attempts to spin the disc two or three times. It also appears that when the disc is inserted, the spindle hole is not directly over the drive motor, it's slightly off to the left side.
I don't think the mechanics of the drive can be fixed to correct this problem as everything else looks as it should, as far as I can tell.
I suppose I will need to get an entire new drive, excluding the deck + laser.
Does this continue to sound similar to your situation, fringle?
Again, thanks so much for the help!

This is exactly what happened to my drive. Tried playing with the mechanics for about a week before I broke down and just got a complete drive replacement
So now I have a spare deck and laser should my current one fail.
