I am having a bit of a strange issue (not even up to the level of real problem at this point) with a 160g slim I bought brand new maybe 2 weeks ago. I have searched the forums but with no luck, as all the results were temp related, where I am about 99% sure mine has nothing to do with heat.

Basically my PS3, only very occasionally and totally random in terms of timing, completely loses power. Not talking about it shutting off to blinking red light or anything, I mean no light whatsoever. If I unplug the power cord for 5 seconds and plug it back in it lights back up and starts with no problems.

Strange thing is, it only does it under 2 circumstances: Either while in XMB (only once so far) or overnight when the console is powered off. That's why I am fairly confident it isn't in any way temp related. If I am playing a game or watching a movie, I can play or watch for hours and hours without so much as a hiccup.

Anyone else have/heard of this issue? I suppose it could be a PSU issue, in which case I can just back up my HDD and then take it back to the store for an exchange, but before I go that route I wanted to see if anyone has any ideas. I am running 3.55 Kemaw, but as I went with CFW about 2 hours after I bought it, I really have no idea if that is at all related.

Anyways, thanks in advance for any ideas people might have.

Try plugging it into a different wall socket on its own. Could be a power surge. Just a guess though

I'd backup, format, update to 3.56, and return it for a new unit while you still can.

Your backup can be restored on your new PS3.

Problem solved, looks like. Turns out it was the surge protector I had it plugged into, I moved it to a different one on a different outlet, and have had no issues since.

    Thanks everyone.
