new to the ps3 scene
ok I'm a huge newb to the ps3 scene.. I wanna buy a ps3 that will allow me to play ps1/ps2/ps3 backups as well as put in a bigger hdd..
so here are my questions
1)which is the best system for what I want (i.e. .. can i do these things with a slim or is the 80gb fatback the "best" one)
2)what is the largest size HDD the ps3 will recognize (i.e .. can I put a 2TB drive in?)
3)I understand that if I want to use something like Multiman that I have to jailbreak the ps3), but the question is, do I need a modchip to use the backups, or will jailbreak + Multiman resolve this issue?
4)IF I need a modchip, which is better, dongle or solder?
I guess those are my only questions, and I wanna deal with this soon (meaning, buy a ps3 and start downloading games on my 20MB internet haha)
Alright, not sure about which console is best, some newer ones are on newer firmwares.
You might have to try buy an older console, not the 160GB ones. (one from before the pricedrop 6 weeks ago, should be some still in stores)
Some of the newer model consoles come with later unhackable firmware, but you can downgrade the console to the hackable firmware.
Downgrading is a bit of an ordeal though, as you have to spend roughly $100 on tools & open up your console to use them.
and even then it's apparent that some consoles are not downgradable.
There's enough documentation online though to be sure if the console will have a hackable firmware preinstalled on it.
Be prepared to possibly spend some extra money on a 320GB model or something though. ($100 extra)
And the hard drive,
750GB is the largest size HDD for internal that you would be able to fit in the console.
You can manage to fit a 1TB HDD in (and maybe even 1.5TB), but you'll have to remove the docking tray & fiddle round a bit. Since it's a millimeter taller or so.
I couldn't get it to fit in when I tried, but some people have.
I'd recommend 750GB internal any time, much faster loading times than external usb HDD.
Be sure to get a 7500RPM drive, not a 5400RPM one, as the speed will not be suited with the PS3 at 5400RPM.
You can only fit the 2.5" HDDs in the PS3 so you can rule out having 2TB. Although theoritcally you could hook up a 3.5" HDD with some messy cables and get 2.5TB internally.
Not worth the mess though.
External HDDs not really much of a limit there, 2TB USB would be fine.
Be sure to upgrade the internal HDD though.
As for actually jailbreaking the console, it's fairly simple.
All you need to do is install a modified firmware update (pop it on a USB & select "update via usb") then you're pretty much good to go.
Just need to get a backup manager to load/rip/transfer your games.
No maintenance or dongle needed.
Edit: Missed the part about PS2 backups. If you want to be able to play ps2 games you'll have to get one of the ancient 2007 60GB/80GB PHAT models. (Which are prone to various hardware errors.)
Aswell as the Cobra dongle I believe.
the 720gb hdd is a 9.5mm right? I don't mind toying with the dock if it means getting extra space.. cuz some ps3 games are like 50gb right? it'd be nice to be able to fit 50-100 games on the hdd (including ps1 games and saving on the internal memory card.. thx multiman haha)
cheers for some knowledge.. it seems like it's best to buy like a slim 120 new..
I just watched a youtube video talking about upgrading the hdd.. it says only use 2.5" SATA 5400rpm, as the 7200 could be incompatible..
Yeah any 2.5 5400rpm should work. There are compatible 7200 but you'd have to do some researching.

The system itself is actually capable of recognizing up to a 2tb drive, but you would need to have an external caddy for that. Basically, a caddy with sata and power extensions that would allow you to connect a 3.5" drive to the ps3, though it's ugly and a bit of a pain.
For backwards compatibility, you would need a 80gb phat or earlier. You will know which ones are backwards compatible by googling the model number. For example, I have a CECHE01, which is an 80gb phat, backwards compatible.
As far as jailbreaking, as long as the ps3 you buy is firmware 3.55 or earlier, all you will need to jailbreak it is some patience and a USB stick.
lol, how much patience, and what's on the USB stick? (I don't actually have those anymore cuz I have my smartphone..)
thumb drive (USB flash drive), for PS1, Ps2 & PS3 playback you'll want the original 60GB model (80GB not 100% on PS2 backwards incompatibility) on no FW any higher than 3.55, I also recommend the Cobra USB jailbreak dongle (or you could wait on JFW DH CFW) there is a 1TB drive that will fit but at twice the price it's not worth it, 750GB will work just fine
