Netflix with CFW 3.55 –
02-21-2011,12:10 PM
So, the misses wants to cut the cord on cable, and get netflix. Well my only PS3 has CFW 3.55 on it, and I haven't been online since days of 3.41. But, to appease her, is it possible to connect my PS3 back to the internet, and click that netflix icon or use netflix, without compromising my CFW. I've heard of SONY pushing the 3.56 update without the user's consent, but this is all hearsay and paranoia.
I've also heard people using PlayOn, | PlayOn | Watch Hulu, CBS.com, MLB.tv, Netflix, and more on your TV with PlayOn!, to get netflix without compromising their CFW. Just unsure about this one, since the PS3 is still connected to the internet.
Or should I just say **** it, and this finally gives me a reason to get a 360 or another PS3 for online play. And if that's the case, now I got another issue, which one; another PS3 or a 360? Seeing how I mainly played online with the PS3 for MAG and SOCOM, which the 360 will never have, but she's already hopped on that Kinect bandwagon. (Using a 360 is cheaper as an excuse)
Sorry a lot of questions for one post...
Thanks in Advance

I use PlayON in my network and it works great. Downside is you have to have a host computer running the software. Upside is that PlayON is so much more then just Netflix. It's also Hulu, Pandora, various websites that have online content (CBS, TBS, Spike, NFL, etc) and has a scriptable interface where 3rd party users have added TvLinks, and various live streaming from around the world. You can have your PS3 safely on you local network, just turn off Auto Sign-In. Not sure if it'll still work w/ your DNS on your PS3 set to something that doesn't exist (I think it'd be fine, because it'd still find your PlayON host on your local network and technically that does all the media linking). If you'd like me to test it, I can later on tonight and post my results.
Edit: Here's a site w/ scripts for PlayOn: http://www.playonscripts.com/ and here's one for plugins: http://www.playonplugins.com/
Scripts are definitely more popular then plugins lately, but you can find content w/ both.

If you don't want to run the PlayOn software on your PC, or you don't have Windows (like in my case), just get an Xbox360….don't buy another system you already own JUST for an online service…Xbox360 does require Live for NetFlix, but they don't go around suing everyone and trying to get IPs of people that go on GeoHots website, plus you can get a new Xbox360 Slim for $200 vs $300 for a new PS3….Xbox360 also has some great games such as the God of War series and Fable series….

As of 1/26/2011:
3.60 Now Live!
PS3 80GB Non-BC >> Waninkoko 3.55 >> Kmeaw 3.55>> Sold!
Sure-fire way to prevent PSN Bans: Update to OFW!

Problem w/ the 360 though, is that it's $50/yr for their online service. They have been adding a ton of new content though. I personally use my 360's and media center extenders though, and access PlayOn on them through there.

^^ God of war series on xbox 360? I think you meant Gears of war...haha
I think it needs to be said that you can also just go pick up a netflix capable device for much cheaper than buying a new gaming system. Roku has great prices on theirs, 59.99 is the starting price. Also, most blu-ray players nowadays have netflix and pandora built in as well and I believe you can get a decent one for the 100-150 range. I was in the same boat with my wife but I was forced to upgrade against my will =(
We know who wears the pants in my household....

So, checking out this PlayOn, and it looks promising, I'll probably actually check it out more in depth this evening when I get home....But, I am honestly anxious about getting it connected back to internet...So, just turning off auto-sign is the only option I have in stopping her or even I from 'accidentally' auto-updating my PS3?

I went with a Roku. I know PlayOn is an option, but I don't really feel like running a Windows VM solely for a single app. I wish those guys would make a Linux version
And anyway, if you get the "premium" license, you might as well have just bought a Roku anyway and gotten another toy to play with--same price.
edit: Also, I'm not entirely clear on how PlayOn works, but it seems like you could just block all WAN access to your PS3 on your router and it should still work since I'm guessing the Windows box that is running the application is the one that's actually getting the content from the Internet, ie, your PS3 doesn't need to have Internet access, just LAN.

Yea, I could buy a Roku, but after just glancing through the site, seems PlayOn offers more content than just Netflix – from Hulu to YouTube and Comedy Central. It seems they also stream media...I wonder how well..

It's not bad when it works. Spotty when it doesn't. With one of those plugins, I can pickup Animal Planet, CBS, NBC, Spike, Comedy Central, HBO, some various news channels, etc. But, like I said, it's spotty at best on the live streaming through some of the plugins. The actual built in content works perfectly though.
Also, as far as worrying about the girl updating your machine, use Rebug's new 3.56 spoofer. That'll stop it from wanting to update.
