Wow, that's insane. I don't know about where you live, but I'm in Florida, and over here if a previous employer bashes you, you sue them for everything they're worth because it's illegal. Pretty much the only thing they're allowed to say about you is strictly work related; meaning they can comment on whether you were late to work frequently, but that's about it.

I have 8 years experience in the telecommunications industry, split up between different positions all in retail. I did retail sales on a commission structure the whole time, for 4 of those years I was also a lead tech doing cellular repair, and 5 of those years I was in management, both store level and district level. On top of that, I've been repairing and building computers and electronics since I was 12. I couldn't get a job selling phones when I've been doing it my whole life and have the experience on paper to back it up!!! On top of that, the pay rate for it has been going down EVERY YEAR. At AT&T corporate, 3 years ago I making 55k/yr. Last year at the same job with the same position, I barely cleared 45k, and the commission cuts for the people still working there just keep on coming. Twice a year the commission is cut and the quotas are raised, so every year every employee makes less money for more work then the year before. Now you know why their customer service skills suck; they're barely making it by, busting their a$$es for less and less every year, and are constantly pressured to sell more and more and spend less time with each customer.
About 3 months ago I was given an opportunity to join a repair company as a partner, with joint and equal ownership. I jumped on the opportunity, even though I'm making less money now than I was when I was 18. At least now I own part of the company and I'm my own boss. Before, they were really only repairing iPhones, with a couple exceptions for some HTC and Blackberry models. Now that I'm on-board, we repair all smartphones, PCs, laptops, macs, game consoles, etc. I specialize in logic board repair and do re-balling as well. That all being said; the economy sucks, and as a new business there's not enough money to pay employees what they're actually worth, yet they're thanking me all the time because they're just happy to have a job at all, plus they're getting valuable training and experience while getting paid (and I'm paying them more than minimum wage, while still in training, which is more than most businesses are doing). Basically, I'm seeing the other side of this coin. I have resumes coming in all the time, the people are extremely qualified, and they're all willing to accept minimum wage. I've had technicians come to my store asking if I was hiring, with resumes that show 4+ years of computer repair and an A+ certification, and literally say they'll take any wage and any hours I can give them. With this situation being normal now-a-days, I don't understand how the economy is going to get out of this rut. Businesses are constantly taking advantage of this slump by decreasing pay, laying people off, having other employees picking up the slack without increases in pay, some companies aren't even paying time and a half for overtime!!! All of this is simply taking more money out of the economy and making the situation worse.
Sorry for the massive derail there, but I saw that post and had to comment on it.
