Ok I just got a ps3 and I am having many issues, I have no previous ps3 exp so i will need this in lamans trems. I will name off these issues.
1. So I turn on the ps3 and it doesnt even make it past the first loading screen where it says sony home entertainment or whatever.
2. So ti makes it to the home screen but just sits there and loads, I can put in a game and nothing will happen.
3. home screen with me being able to select different menus but once i go to change anything in a menu the system freezes.
4. Blu ray remotes doesnt work ( new batteries)

while the ps3 is in standby mode * red light on *.
hold your finger on the power button, the ps3 will turn on but keep your finger pressed.. and wait for the 3rd beep. should take about 10seconds.
your ps3 should then be in the recovery menu.
choose option 3 - Restore system files.
your ps3 will reboot, and you might get a message saying the hard-drive is corrupt.. sometimes the ps3 will continue to reboot after receiving this message,
one time it happened to me 4 times before i got back into the dashboard.

that should fix your problem.
however if the problem keeps repeating itself, like every time even after restoring the system files and you freeze again, it could mean the harddrive has died, that happened to mine after having it for only 3-4months.
since buying a new 320gig hdd, i have not had a single freeze... and i use the ps3 every day.
hope i helped.
*EDIT*
BTW: restoring your system files should not delete any of your saved data/games/saves/movies ect..
*EDIT2*
regarding the blueray remote... to get it working you need to do this..
from the dashboard select SETTINGS->ACCESSORY SETTINGS->REGISTER BD REMOTE CONTROL
you will then be asked to hold down the START+ENTER buttons on the remote until the screen changes.. around 5seconds. your remote will then be working.
