I am mostly a pc gamer, but I finally pick up a ps3 since the prices dropped much since it's release. I head to gamestop and pick up a ps3 fat 80gb since it has at least some sort of backward compatibility for my favorite sony system the ps2. All is well, I pick up 4 games at first (resistance 1-3 and little big planet).
I install LBP, resistance 1 and dc universe online they all play well with no hitches. I then decide I am starting to dig my ps3 a bit after completing about 3/4's (guessing) of resistance, and playing enough of dc universe to get a level 7 charactor. I decide to go to gamestop and pick up metal gear, a bluetooth, another controller for my roomate, a small wireless keyboard that attaches to the joystick, and a few more games. I install Capcom vs. Street Fighter 3, all is well. My roomate and I have a blast playing it.
Then after our thumbs were a bit sore I pop in Metal Gear Solid 4, the system starts bugging out. It doesn't even get to the install screen and it is flashing a disc with a question mark on it. My roomate pulled the disc out, I tell him to look for scratches and/or junk on the disc. Nothing he says. Pops it back in, the ps3 reads the disc as "Corrupted Data", then he pulls it again, shows it to me, the silver part seems to look like it "swirls" in the light. Like a bad cd burn or something (this isn't a burn). But other than the weird swirlyness of the bdrom's shiny side, it looks to be mint. So we stick it back in after a while of the system being off (and starting it back up we had to check the filesystem for errors since the ps3 locked up trying to eject it last time), it seems to load. It then starts installing to the hard drive, gets about 97% done and it freezes the system with the question mark disc icon again. After another cool down cycle I stick it back in, it finishes the install quickly and we go to start the game, it doesn't make it to the first fmv and the disc read error pops up again. So we try another disc, infamous. It stops installing on the hard drive at 18 percent. Then I decided to stick in Resistance 1, a game I completed about 3/4's of, and now it won't load with disc errors.
About the system:
System is unmodded, in a dry cool place, a 2 day old gamestop refurbished, new plastic covers on the case without sony ps3 branding, in a small tv stand with wires going out a small port in a back to the 42" 1080p tv on top, using hdmi, and using all official sony preripherals that are 2nd hand preowned. Sounds to me like a heat issue with the bdrom drive, but I want your thoughts to see if maybe it can be fixed from taking it out of the tv stand and putting it in a more open aired enviroment or should I just take it back to gamestop. I am only conflicted because that was the only backwards compatible one they had, so if I can get this one to work I will be much more happy. But I have a 1 year warrenty if it is needed.
