The ps3 stopped reading original games so I replaced the laser with one from ebay. Games are now working but Blurays show up as data only. Is this just a bad laser?

What happen if you choose autoload when disk inserted and you put BD movie?

Well, you didn't have this problem before replacing the laser, and now you do. So that narrows it down. Either you messed something up when taking it apart (pretty hard to do if your careful and observant), or the laser is defective because it's a low quality aftermarket part that was sold on eBay (I've gotten some eBay duds myself).

Agree. Surely a bad work, or ebay trash

Make sure that the rails that hold down the laser are very secure, if the laser is allowed to wobble, it wouldn't read properly. Also, there's a bit of a trick to get the rail out that goes through the laser; you have to put a small amount of pressure on the controller board and slide the laser all the way to the back, furthest away from the spindle. Then you have the room and leverage to remove the rail without bending or breaking anything.
