Increase your PS3 Wifi Speed (Fat models only)
Increase your PS3 Wifi Speed (Fat models only) –
So you've probably already realized that downloading things on the older PS3 takes forever. You might have changed router settings, disabled wireless B (Occasionally works, if you don't use Wireless B, I suggest you try this first), adjusted your NAT type, put the PS3 into DMZ with barely any noticeable improvements. The problem isn't your router or PS3. It's the location of the internal antennas.
The PS3 has 2 antennas for wireless. I believe 1 is a send antenna and 1 is a receive antenna. One of the antennas are in the back between the BluRay drive and power supply and one of them are in the front on the USB port/bluetooth board (A, E, G models have it on the bottom, others have it on the top). This modification relocates the rear antenna to the front of the console while still keeping it internal. Most mods add an external antenna. I personally don't like that, I don't want my PS3 to look like a 360.
The antennas look like this:
Rear (All models)
Front (bottom of Bluetooth board, A, E, G models)
Front (top of Bluetooth board, all other models)
So here's some pictures of your PS3 when it's opened.
This is for the 60GB (A), 80GB (E) and 40GB (G) models.
All other models (I'm pointing to the relocated antenna)
Basically you want to take the rear antenna and move it to the bottom right corner screw of the above picture. This doesn't interfere with the case closing and for me, increased my wireless speed from 1MB every 4 sec (downloading demo) to about 3MB ever second (downloading demo).
The theory behind the repair
I honestly don't know why this works however I feel it has to do with the location of your PS3. Say you put the PS3 on your TVs entertainment system which is up against a wall. One of your antennas is completely covered. The PS3 slim has both their antennas in the front of the console in front of the fan with wires going to the back of the console. You'll probably notice that the PS3 slims wireless connection is much better than the fat PS3s wireless connection. They both use the same exact wireless card. I'm betting that the location of the wireless card has a lot to do with the speed.
I've done this on my 40GB (H) and 80GB (E) models with excellent results. Let me know if you guys have any success.

Hi core2kid, I find this very interesting. Once i get my old FAT PS3 running again I will try this since it's in pieces already. Nice post.
Thanks. Hopefully it helps a lot of people out.

Any chance I can request another screenshot of the location I'm supposed to put the rear antenna? Maybe circle it with Photoshop or something. Pics are kinds hard to tell where to put it. I would like to try this though...thx
As far as I know, my ps3 has never had an undetected error.
I edited the first post with some better pictures.

Sometimes in MW2, my connection would be so low that it's unplayable. Of course, the location of your console has to do a lot with this repair. If you're really close to the router, I doubt this will do anything. This is only for the people who have speed problems.

Pretty cool, man. I need to clean mine out anyway, so I'm definitely gonna try this out shortly.
Works awesome, downloaded a 22MB game update in ~5 minutes as opposed to the ~8-10 it normally would take.

Awesome, good to hear.
