How to know which laser + fan problems

So my ps3 doesn't read any discs at all. When I put one in the loading circle thing on the top right just spins continuously. When I take the disc out it seems to come out in the exact same position, i.e its not spinning. Is this a dead laser? How would I find out which one I need and do I need the whole mechanism? Anyone suggest a good retailer? (UK)

Also my PS3 sounds like a jet engine about 10 minutes or so after turning it on. Anything I can do when I have it open to stop this?

Yip sounds like the laser has gone. Open her up and check what laser you have then pay a visit to ebay and get the same laser with deck for about £40 just make sure the ebay seller has a good feedback. While the PS3 is open give it a good clean to get rid of all the dust n shit, maybe even take of the fan and give that a good clean as well
