General questions from a PS3 newbie.
General questions from a PS3 newbie. –
I am planning on a buying a PS3 and have some questions to those willing - and/or not lazy - enough to help. Bear in mind that the last time I've used a gaming console (yup, PC-gamer) was in PSOne times, so some of the questions might seems a tad stupid.
Which one should I get? Is there any difference between the 320GB and 160GB, besides, well, the memory?
What's the point in a console having memory? Do you install games to the console and play without the disc?
Due to PS3 games being quite expensive I'm considering jailbraking. Is it dangerous, as in, how high is the probability of a "brick"? Can you still play online?
Are most games cracked? (Though I'm mostly interested in MGS, Heavy Rain, Uncharted and such). Is multiplayer available on cracked games? Can you still play games you actually bought on a jailbroken console?
I think that's it for now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Here's a tip for asking for help. Don't call people lazy. As for your questions if you want to get a PS3 for jailbreaking purposes, you need to find one with firmware of 3.55 or less. The most recent ones that are sitting on WalMart shelves are unhackable. Your best bet is to go to a pawn shop or gamestop and check the firmware on used models before you buy. other than the amount of hard drive space, there is no difference between most of the ps3 systems, except the first couple fat models. The early ones can play ps2 games as well as ps3. I'm not sure of the exact models, but google is your friend. It doesn't really matter too much about your hard drive size on the ps3, because once you start playing around with this, it won't be long before you replace the hard drive anyway. Even 320 gigs fills up quick. Your best bet would be to replace the internal drive with a 1 Terabyte and buy an external 3 terabyte. They both run about $100 each. It sounds like a lot of money, but the amount of stuff you can put on there runs in to the 10's of thousands, so just take a leap on that. There is no risk of bricking as long as you install 3.55 KMEAW. It is the most stable firmware. There are newer ones based off of kmeaw, but you shouldn't mess with them until you're comfortable playing around with your system. The only games you need to crack are the 20 or so latest games, and a few of them are already done. More will be coming as time goes by. To play 95% of ps3 backups, they are just straight disc dumps and nothing is altered. All of the games you mentioned play perfectly without any mod or patch. You can not play on PSN as of right now, but you can check out xlink kai to play online on a different server. I don't think I missed anything, but also you should know to be careful about talking about piracy. We can talk freely about playing legally owned backups
Oh for goodness sake! Only joking .
The choice in HD size (320 or 160) is up to you, but as I'm sure you know from your PC gaming, you can never really have too much drive space
If you want to download and play PSN games (small and not so small games that you buy from the playstaion network) you have to install them, also if you jailbreak your console you will be able to install games to the HD instead of having to go and get your disk and changing it every time you want to play something else (using a backup manager, such as Mulitman). Many games also require you install some of the files on the HD to aid faster loading times(if jailbroken or not). Un-jailbroken consoles still need the disk in to make sure you haven't made a naughty copy , jailbroken ones differ in the fact that many games don't care if you have a disk in and the ones that do don't care what game it is.
There is little risk of bricking your system if you follow one of the great guides on here and stick to tried and tested firmware, many people use KMEAW at the moment (version 3.55 is the latest at the time of writing and has been for nearly a year). You must have a PS3 that comes out of the box on either v3.55 or lower to do this though.
You can't go on to sonys propitiatory network (PSN) after jailbreaking, but there are programs that run on your PC (Xlink for example) that allow online playing through the LAN system link option that is often in many games. These are usually pretty simple to set up and as long as you have a router with the PS3 and PC plugged into it your good to go
As far as I know all games are playable on a jailbroken PS3 up to (but not including) Portal 2, unless you buy a thing called "True Blue" (but the way things are going in the last week or so, this could well change soon, or at least we all hope it does) See the main page for news on the True Blue dongle.
As long as a game doesn't require firmware above 3.55, basically any game up until Portal 2 was released, although a few have been cracked since allowing you to still play them on a 3.55 machine even though the retail disk wants 3.6 or 3.7, that is after you have "obtained" a patched eboot (the ps3's version of an exe) and copied the game and "fix" to the HD, (L.A. Noir, Uncharted 3 are two that come to mind) then yes you can play retail games, and back them up to your HD to save scratching of the disks etc.
I was always a die hard xbox kiddy but Uncharted 2 & Heavy rain soon changed that, if you can get a PS3 make sure you do, they are superb games . I don't think MGS can be played at the moment though, I'm sure someone can clear it up and let us know though
I hope I've made sense, it's been a long day and I ramble (plus have a habit of using too many brackets ). If you have any other questions many things are already covered in the forums and if not there is always someone on here with too much time on their hands (like me at the mo ) who will try to help.
half-arsed lazy modder
There is no difference between 320GB and 160GB PS3s beside the larger hard drives.
You can install games to the console and play without the disc, but you need a 'jailbroken' console. Otherwise, most games will still install to the hard drive, but still require the disc to play.
You have a low probability of bricking your system. Just keep the number of times you install custom firmware to a minimum.
You cannot play on PSN with a 'jailbroken' PS3. Period.
Most games don't need to be cracked. Only the newer ones that require firmware 3.6 or higher. The games you mentioned do not require a crack (except Uncharted 3). Multiplayer is possible, but only over LAN (not PSN). Look into XLink Kai for LAN play over the internet.
You can't play newer games (ones that have been released since May 2011) on 'jailbroken' PS3s (even legit retail discs) . There are a few here and there that have been fixed, but it's best to assume they are unplayable.
I know he was joking, just effing with him. indirect76 was a little off. You do not need the original disc to play off of the hard drive, you just need ANY original disc to play games off of the hard drive
Huge thanks for your thorough responses, guys!
I'm thinking on getting the 320Gb+Battlefield 3 bundle and I'm guessing the console's already gonna be updated, so jailbreaking is apparently out of the question for now.
But anyways, thanks again for the help
