Well, opened my "used" PS3 and tried to fix blu ray drive and found this:
There is no clip to fit the ribbon cable onto it and from the looks of it, looks pretty bad!
Would it be possible to fix and how easy would it be?

Anything can be fixed but looks tricky.
If the connector is a standard part and you can get one cheap it would be worth a shot. Just lightly rub back to expose some of the traces and solder the points if possible or use wires and follow traces back to an easier solder point.
Not worth paying someone to do but if you have the tools or a good friend or relative who'll do it cheap it's worth a try.
Please PM a mod and have this thread moved. This is the "development" forum, not the "repair my PS3" forum. This would have been better suited for the "PS3 General Discussion"
On the subject at hand, I have no idea, looks like somebody swapped the motherboard out with a different model (hence the slots not opening over a socket for the ribbon cable). I doubt anybody can cook up homebrew software to fix your problem, either.

Thanks for both replies. I will PM a mod to move this topic!

Hmmm... looking at it again, it seems like the connector has been removed. We called these "Hirose" connectors when I was working on automotive radio product development.
Maybe somebody desoldered the connector to use on another board?

Woah! I thought mine was bad..
The traces seem to be okay, you could possibley save it but with the amount of time it would take (if you can do it yourself) ya gotta ask yourself if it's worth it..
The points to solder onto are under the metal cover towards the top of the picture, you need to use some very thin cable (30 AWG) and connect those points onto your ribbon cable and secure everything in place.. Painstaking work!
Hello again!
Didn't think this would get much attention so I have instead bought another motherboard w/ logic board intact and all clips are good on this one, so will leave this (pictured) as a media back up as I've been streaming films/series from Iplayer, 4oD etc as well as stuff from PC.
'Mistawes' rightly stated "ya gotta ask yourself if it's worth it..." I didn't think so![]()
