just curious, i have done many xbox 360 rrod repairs. this will be my first ps3 with heatgun.(before was a quick paste swap)

my first question is if the BD cable is not connecting correctly will it still boot up?(see photo)i used a piece of cardboard so it stays in the connector(clip is broken)

next question is, in my xbox experience the heatsink and artic silver always had complete contact(unlike this). is this normal? my first phat looked like this too.

i also noticed the wi-fi cable(or the cable on the usb board. (sorry so big)

as you can see it didnt get to hot...

i know with the xbox i can poweer it on and run correctly with just the case and motherboard and drive connected, is it the same for the ps3 or does it have to be all together?
i know there are tuts out there but they just go into how to repair not really detailed in what needs to be attached or what will make it not boot besides a bent board or bad paste.
before i waste my precious artic silver and time i would like to know these thinks.
    thanX in advance.

PS3 board will power up and display a message without BD drive or wifi board.

The dash boots but without a BD drive connected, I don't think programs will load. I can't say about the HS, looks normal I guess.

Well applied fix. Seemed promising but no go. Yellow then blinks red.. anyone know what the output voltage would be on the power unit? Firmware would be just red right? I would google but not at home and my 3g is like dial up right now. Lol

I can't tell what version you have but fat PSU's have 5 white wires. From left to right facing the psu connector is 3.3V, G, G, 5V, 5V. The big pin connectors on the bottom is 12V Front side, ground towards the back. The slims have 4 white wires 5V, ?, G, 5V. I cant remember the second if it was 4.5 or 3.3, it might be a power good signal but it is not a ground.

if it was hardware issues it would be a red light right?
got it pretty hot yesterday. comes on for a little bit longer but then goes yellow again.
