One other thing to bear in mind. I know you did not mention this, but some people compare this scene to PSP. There really is NO comparison as the PSP was a HW hack, and this 1 was software. As quick as things have been moving there is still a chance, but as Amp said, only time will tell.

Has anybody some info about the actual chip which holds the firmware?
Maybe it is possible somehow to desolder it and reflash it on a programmer afterwards, then solder it back?
It's just an idea though

We still have a lv1 exploit for PS3 (geohot's), and this exploit is essentially a HW exploit. And it's still not patched, too.
