I'm having some issues with my PS3 and cant get to the root of the problem. It began when I downloaded the latest firmware update earlier this week. Afterwards I was playing NCAA 12 and the sound went away then it froze on me. I tried other games and none of them would load. So I did a full system restore overnight and tried it again the next day with NCAA 12. It worked for about 20 mins and then the sound went away and it froze again. After this I did the power button thing where it brings you to the screen with 6 options and I chose Option 3 rebulid the file system. When I did this I noticed that it said the hard drive was corrupt and it would be restored. After doing this I tried a different game and it worked fine, although I only played for about 25 minutes, and I tried I regular DVD movie and it seemed to have no problems. So thinking it may be fixed I put NCAA 12 back in and the freeze happens again and myhard drive was corrupted again. After this happens I cant load any games with out restoring the file system again.

So I'm thinking it could be the game causing the problems but I question that b/c I never had an issue until the minute I downloaded the new firmware and I'm not sure how a game could all of a sudden corrupt the hard drive.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like your hdd is bad.
Try replasing the hdd with an other to see if it works...
I dont think so that the firmware or the game caused the problem...
Or you can take out the hdd place it to your computer and scan for bad sectors.

The "corrupt HDD" message always happens when you choose restore file system in recovery. It isn't necessarily a bad hdd.
However I have no clue about this, can't really help :s

How would I go about checking it with my computer? And what exactly would I be looking for. I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to computer issues so any help would be good

My advice is just test the ps3 with another hdd..
If it running well than you're for sure.
Your problem happend me before and was a bad hdd
You can try it on the pc but if you have windows you just can't read the data you will have to format it then.
    Cheers!

To do this I would need to buy another HDD? I wouldn't want to do that unless it was surely the problem. Also could you direct me to what HDD I would need to buy?

You can take out the hdd and place it to your computer with a sata cable or you can use a docking station and use the hdd as external to your pc.
Then download Seatools (if your hdd is seagate) or WDtolls (if its an WD disk) and test the disk.
You will look for bad sectors and try to repair them. If the program find bad sectors it is better to replace the hdd with a new one....
It doesnt worth to fix the old becouse the sectores will break down again and again....
My advise if there are bad sectors repair most of them place the hdd to ps3 and back up everything and then replace the hdd with a new one...
If it is not the hdd the prob then better sent the console to Sony to take a look....
