Updated with latest firmware 1.31 that allows you to run HDD based games.

Was having a little problem doing a full update because a required file you have to download and install at the playstation store. This is only currently avalable Japanese regioned players so i made a new user account with a japanese address of course.
That did the trick and now im installing the playonline viewer which is currently going through some updates.

After a lengthy install of 4 disks and 2 updates i can confirm the game works just fine on PS3.

    What is different?:
Basically nothing. Same looking game with prolly just a few minor things.
Havent tested the lag factor yet but there is a noticable drag difference.
May be hard to explain but the game now feels like its dragging less to use RAM. When first logged in the MH, i noticed my character moves around in there a bit faster but once zoned out it moved normally. Since the PS3 has a better and faster RAM then this could explain why there is less dragging when in game. You could say there is very slightly less loading time (hardly noticable) or not but it does feel a little smoother on the PS3. Could be just me though.

Through an HDMI connection it does look horrible but i found that using the PS2 with some component cables really makes a difference. Things look much better and sharper. Though i havent tried component cables with the ps3 yet. Thing that sucks the worst is that i cant use my ps2/keyboard combo with FFXI cus only the keyboard works. Have to use a PS3 controller.
