    Hey guys,

I bought an old fat model PS3 wth the 2 USB ports serial CK027868201 CECHK01 for $25 at a garage sale. the guy said the hard drive was corrupted. Me being a newbie thought, hell i have a couple hard drives at home, i will swap and be fine. When I got home the PS3 turned on to a RSOD. Before I found this site i followed a basic tutorial and popped in a new HD after formatting on the computer, entered into service mode, and updated system with a USB drive containing the latest 4.11 that I downloaded from sony's website. It reformatted and then proceeded to have me press the select and start button to load the update, but it hung at 99% for hours and then returned to RSOD. i have tried several drives with the same result. I have probably wasted $25 but thought I would check with you guys first before i pitched the thing out.

Thanks badboyz80, I guess you are correct since no one else is replying to my question.

Possibly E3 flasher/downgrader can fix it. But I think they are at least $60.

Hold on. can you get into recovery mode? if so I want you to go to system upsate. Don't UPDATE though. just choose that option and see what version of the software it requests. if it asks for 3.55 (or lower) and up than you can just use the RSOD fix detailed on the dev wiki. if it's on 3.56 and up you will need to purchase a flasher to downgrade it. however this may not be worth it as the thing could not get fixed or just RSOD again a lil while down the road.

i can get into recovery, but unfortunately i didnt find this forum until after i downloaded the current 4.11 and tried to update to that. it would load all the way to 99%and sit there for hours on end. I even tried the latest 4.20 which was just released. It does not hang during install and completes but upon going through the accept terms of use policy and whatnot, when the system boots back up it returns to RSOD which is why I ask if it could be hardware related. I saw on some other site that RSOD could be hardware related but it didnt give any details of what the problem could be or the fix.
