Something interesting I noticed comparing my 60GB and 40GB... the 60GB has vents on the front, under the blu-ray drive (so to the right of the USB ports). The 40GB does not have these.
If I get the 19-blade fan for the 40GB, then I may take a drill to the case to put those extra air-flow holes in the front. I find it odd that a later edition PS3 didn't have them compared to the much older one.
I have a launch 20 gig that I got for $50 with a failed hard drive. Replaced the hard drive with something cheap (60 gig), and later upgraded to 700 gig (I kinda want to get in there and slap in a 1 or 2TB, for good measure). The BR drive is a bit clunky when reading discs, but odds are, it just needs cleaned (I have voice issues on FF XIII, sometimes voices don't play), but when it reads them it reads them. Every year, I clean out the dust and check if it needs new thermal paste. Still works, so thats good. I do have a PS2 in case the system decides to break.
I bought a 80GB CECHK01 for 125 euros , came with 3.15 too . What a luck , can't wait to play my MAME collection . I did notice a problem with the HDMI connector though , if i shake the cable then image gets scrambled and dissapears ,probably the connector is loose . All in all i declare myself satisfied .
Its been almost 3 and a half years since I've had my 60gb PAL PS3 with backwards compatibility.
So far it's been superb, no problems whatso ever. The only thing is that the part that covers my memory stick area's is broken. :S
