Fan question

Just picked up an old 40GB, how does the fan work (I guess all models are the same?) Does the fan immediately turn on when the power is turned on, or does it switch on/off automatically? Is there anyway to test that the fan actually works proper?
I`m comparing it to my 60GB, where the fan sounds much louder.

Is the temperature too high due to the sound?
