exterrnal hdd

Hi guy,
when i was playing mw2 of a external hdd today the screen suddenly became black but the ps3 was not stuck. so i returned to xmb then to multiman and games from the ext hdd were not there. i removed the ext hdd and put it in again and it started recognizing it.
but i want to know why this happened? is my hard drive going to fail soon? or does it happen to everyone once in a while?
