To exchange or not to exchange.
To exchange or not to exchange. –

Well I've got a ps3 slim out of the move bundle no less. Its 20 days old exactly. I've put in 30 hours on it. I've been playing a backed up FFXIII using a Teensy 2.0 board (played off of disc for about 10 hours first before I received my Teensy). Well today I paused the game before going out to dinner and watching the Kentucky Wildcats beat #10 S. Carolina (suck it) Game****s. After enjoying my game, I came home to a black screen.
I tried to access the XMB assuming the game must have locked up even though that has never happened to me on either of my PS3 consoles. Assuming the Console had locked up I tried restarting it. Only to continue to get a black screen. PS3 wireless light and ps3 hard drive access light seem to be behaving normally for boot up but still no audio or video at any time up to this point. At this point what the hell, I'll reset the screen resolution. I've both component and HDMI hooked up(redundant, I know but I heard ps1 games upscale better over component, I'm still not sure though). Well, still no audio or video. I let it sit for 30 mins and it does boot up and now functions normally and in 1080P.
Well, I guess I'll be exchanging it. I really hate the idea of exchanging it. I don't know what firmware I'll be getting back. Anyone have a theory as to how a temporary black screen is not a precursor to hardware failure? Furthermore if I do go and exchange it, is there a way to back up my saves unprotected AND backup my trophies? I'd rather not lose 30 hours of gameplay. But I'd sooner replay then continue with missing or spoofed trophies.

Have you tried this:
How to Access Playstation Recovery Menu
1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be promted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

Thanks for skimming. Please re-read. The black screen was not permanent. Letting the console cool for 30 mins allowed it to boot up properly. You would've read that had you not skimmed and assumed. Its currently hard to replicate the problem. But right now its a toss up whether I want to return it to the store.
I'm currently theorizing that if a ps3 reaches a certain heat temp that its bios wouldn't allow the ps3 to restart until after a certain amount of time elapsed. But its not like it shutoff to begin with, it just went black screen. And why would a console with a 40nm GPU, 45nm CPU be overheating practically fresh out of the box to being with? If it was out of warranty, I wouldn't hesitate to rip the seal off and replace the stock thermal heat sink compound with some fresh Artic Silver 5. Besides I'm not sold on it being an overheating issue.
I'm out of luck to test a different HDMI cable seeing as how its working again. But the fans blow most of the air out back of the ps3 slim and does a decent job of heating up the HDMI cable which is right next to the vents. But on the negative side I tested it through component which didn't work.
I'm open to theories. I'm about 90% sure though, its best to go ahead and exchange this baby just to be on the safe side. I loath the idea of repackaging especially with the move bundled with it. But at this point, I know there was a trophy editor but I can't remember if it or anything else can actually back up trophies. I don't wish to spoof the trophies but I DON'T believe that TROPUSR.DAT can just be copied to another console, right? It seems that there is a method for cloning saves but its a mute point if I can't clone the trophies.

You did reset the video settings before tying the component?
