i have been doing some extensive testing trying to get a bluray drive married to my ps3 motherboard. i have the kes model (single laser with wide data cable) and i couldnt up/downgrade without failing due to a mis matched bd board (board is good, but mis matched). so in my testing i tried connecting the board only and also held the flash reset pin low on power up. (sony was nice enough to put the flash rst pin and gnd points on the top of the board). i am not sure holdind the flash rst pin low on power up had any bearing on it, but anyway, this caused the ps3 to think that there was a disk inside (blue light on) and now it seems i can up and downgrade at will from both service mode (dongle/lv2.self) and factory mode (hold power button) as well as from the xmb without issue. i also have the activity clock\bubble on disk insertion now, however i still cannot launch apps. i am just looking for corroboration as i havent any more bd boards to test.
my next test will be to supply 12v to the reset pin as this forces unprotected mode (from the spansion datasheet.) and try a up/downgrade. again i no longer need special pups or the new lv2.self that was released recently to preform any up/downgrade between 2.50 and 3.41. i downgraded to 2.50 without issue and upgraded from the xmb to 2.80, then 3.00, then 3.10, ect.ect all of them up to 3.41.
well, no joy... i do find it strange that i can now up/downgrade freely with any method available using official pups. i wonder if the little 25L1005 eeprom has the drive revision (301r 302r ect) on it and causes a version mismatch or something... suppose i'll dump the chip and investigate.
can u post a link to the data sheet?
I have a couple of machines with mismatched boards and never had a problem upgrading the FW on either.
Although I can't obviously play any discs or games. The FW upgrade wasn't a problem though.
