Ok new to the forums not the modding scene. My question is simple. Is there a way of playing music from the HDD while playing a game? Does it need to be imported into the game stream? A net CD or what? ANy help would be great.
Thanks

I would say this is a very early and advanced question.
First of all, PS3 games off the HDD isnt avalable yet.
When it is, the actual PS3 game would have to be specifically programmed to run off the HDD and have a music CD feature.
Other ways (like i have done with many GTA PS2 games) is to extract the game's audio files and customize your own music properly encoded, then rebuild the ISO to install on the HDD.
Hope that helps.
I think he was refering to having music on the PS3 HDD playing while playing a game, ala xbox custom tracks or the MP3 station in the PC GTA's
NO!!!
well not yet...hopefully in the firmware update in march durin the europe launch.
Well like i said in my post above the only way to do that is if the game's programmer would program that game to have that feature.
That means when you play a game it can be ejected then you can insert your music cd but most likely you would have to insert back that game disk once a certain point is reached so it can read more game data. Its a very sloppy method.
Another way would be if the game's programmer would progam a special feature where you could swap your game disk for a music disk, then copy your audio disk to the HDD or have a mp3 folder on the HDD that the game would look for to use.
Only real way is if the game is purposely programmed to run on the HDD to use a music disk feature.
The most likely way would be to custom encode in the music into a iso yourself and run it off the HDD.
No other way to do it.
No firmware update wouldnt work either. A firmware mod would have to selectively reprogram a game's audio function to do this which even if it could it wouldnt still be possible.
1. Swapping disc's is NOT what I ment.
2. They game programmers wouldn't need to program their own encoding routines.
3. Custom ISO's are a no go.
4. Firmware could do it, to an extent.
Firstly do you understand what I ment by "ala xbox custom tracks or the MP3 station in the PC GTA's". For the Xbox (not 360) users simply load up the dashboard (ie no game in tray) and copy (rip) music from audio CD's to the Xbox HDD (WMA format I think), these can be played back using the dashboard AS WELL AS select games had a custom soudtracks feature (majority of racing games, and GTA's etc) where the user selects the soudtrack in game and the game uses the music from the HDD instead of from the standard track from the disc. This is similar to the PC GTA's (3, VC, SA) they had an extra radio station that played MP3's from a set path on the PC.
Sony could easily add a firmware update that allows games to access music stored on the PS3 HDD (or USB drive, Flash crad, etc) and be used in game. It would then be up to the developer to add a 'custom tracks' option to the game. That means any game that is currenly out can't do it (unless that patch it in) but any new games could have the option (think GT5 with your own music)
You just said what i just described.
Im not here to debate because i surely know how this works.
Again, firmware would not work unless it overrules and adds an alternative HDD or anything file access which would have to be compatible with the current game running.
"Take note that Xbox 360 and PS3 users can load any MP3 file into the game by accessing the My Soundtrack feature and PlayStation Network respectively."

"That's good to see. I don't know why custom soundtracks wouldn't be included in the game. Motorstorm will have it, so I don't see why this game wouldn't, especially since the whole game is based off the music."

I too don't want to debate, but let me just say that it is a fairly simple thing to implement, it just comes down to sony allow it and game devs to implement it and a firmware update could do just that.
The cool thing about the 360, is you hit the XB button, and you can just play music on that. I think he meant something similar to that.
chances are that it will come in a future firmware update
