As the title states, I have a Demo Mode PS3 Firmware 1.93. Will the PS3Key (or another method of allowing homebrew etc) work on firmwares this old?

Also, does this being a demo console (yes, I've unlocked it) change anything I need to do about hacking it?

    PS3 Demonstration Unit
Retailers can obtain a PS3 Demonstration Unit for shop display that puts the machine in a special mode that allows playing PS3 games for only a limited time before rebooting. These Demonstration units can have their Demonstration firmware updated to newer versions by connecting to the internet. The PS3 Demonstration unit is identical (hardware-wise) to the consumer PS3 and the PS3 Test units, with the only difference in software installed and the included 120GB harddrive.

Although the PS3 Demonstration Unit is locked into demonstration mode, you can unlock this mode by entering a secret unlock code (those with firmware less than version 1.5 need not enter code). To unlock, navigate the XMB and highlight the Settings->Security Settings icon. Then press and hold these four buttons: L2, R2, Select, and Square. If the PS3 has firmware less than 1.5, the machine should be unlocked from demonstration mode. For firmware 1.5 and greater, you will be prompted to enter a four digit security code.

I dunno what this means for it's compatibility with CFW because it's not one of the model's listed but updating to OFW seems safe.

I got that info from http://www.edepot.com/playstation3.html cut and paste

You are better off converting it to a retail unit.

How would I do that? Just use the new firmware on removable media, like a DVD?

There's a few tutorial on the forums here. Just do a quick search and you'll find them. but you'll need to update the system to the 3.41 kiosk firmware and you'll need a PSGROOVE compatilble dongle.

I'm certainly not going to recommend you flash any CFW to it yet. It's an older model and we dont know what type of nand flash it has. To convert it to a retail unit is simple. Just update to the latest firmware (3.55). It's probably safe to update through the XMB from online update or put the update on a flash drive and follow instructions on how to do that.

It's up to you if you feel safe flashing shit from the internet to it. If I was you I would wait just a bit longer to let other people make the mistakes before you. I would also be trying to compare that demo model to regual model and try to tell exactly which one it is so you have an educated guess as to whether the CFW will work on that model or not. You are braving dangerous territory but I think you will be fine

i suggest the first one & don't update to 3.55 but to 3.41 in order to do this.
after all is done you can do whatever you want.
"10 years after the Playstation XXX AKA.Dr.Shlong, and the release of over 9000 best selling games including Gran Tiramisu and Fetal Fantasy VII, Sony began to look to the future. They saw a Playstation 2, which was unrivalled in it's sucsess."

Thanks for these links. Through the help of my wonderful friend Google, I received a freshly downloaded copy of the 3.41 Demo firmware. Once I get the PS3 out of the closet, I'll get to work and let you guys know how it goes. Thanks again.
