Current Firmware on all new PS3 Slims?
Current Firmware on all new PS3 Slims? –

Is there anyway you can identify which firmware is currently loaded by looking at the Retail Boxes' codes like the PSPs had? I remembered for PSPs you could figure out what firmware is currently loaded onto them by looking at the various codes labeled on the box.
Are all the new PS3 Slims sold in retail stores still below the 3.42 firmware (the one which renders all PS Jailbreaks useless and does not allow homebrew access)?
My question is specific for US and North American regions but if you know what the current firmware of new PS3 Slims in stock is for other regions that would be helpful.
If so what do you think the time frame will be before all of the ones on the shelf will have 3.42 firmware?
Should I get them no later by the end of this month to avoid getting a PS3 with 3.42 FW, or can I afford to wait till sometime next month when Thanksgiving comes around with holiday offers such as discounted prices? E.G. Black Friday deals.

Just bought a 120gb model at Kmart today and it had 3.40. This was a plain old Slim, no Move or LBP/HDMI bundle. I was kinda surprised it wasn't closer to 3.15, but whatever.

When I got my PS3 a few weeks ago from a great find on slickdeals everyone was reporting that every PS3 out was still at 3.40 (that's what mine was for a 160GB) including the Move/320GB PS3 bundle. At least 3 or 4 people confirmed that even the move pack was still at 3.40 in that thread.
In any case I would buy it from a local store with a decent return policy so you can just take it back if it's not right.

Good Luck!

Here are some useful information from Wiki regarding PS3 firmware:
PlayStation 3 system software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Firmware version 3.42 was first released September 6, 2010, and 3.50 is first released September 21, 2010.
These are the most recent Official Firmwares that prevent and block the PS Jailbreak and Homebrew options.
The 3.41 Firmware was first released on July 26, 2010.
PS3 Slim release timeframes: (Just for NA Region but you can find the rest here: PlayStation 3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- 120 GB slims were first available September 1, 2009
- 250 GB were first available November 3, 2009
- 160 GB were first available August 2010
- 320 GB were first available September 19, 2010
If I recall correctly, the 320 GB is only avaialble as a bundle package purchase for NA region. PlayStation Move, PlayStation Eye and Sports Champions bundle. Although I heard some of you mentioned it still shipped with the 3.40 firmware revision.
I think it would be best to ask the retail store whether their current PS3s in stock is either July, August or early September shipments when I go and buy it. Which is likely around this week or weekend, guess I better get buying quickly if PS3 Homebrew is really that important to me.
