Counterfeit PS3 controllers and FW 3.50
Counterfeit PS3 controllers and FW 3.50 –
viewing this in the itouch is amazing lol
In cause and effect terms
I wonder what the effect will be from Sony's 3.50 fw decision
I have recently bought seven (!) PS3 controllers on ebay. The seller stated they were defective.
Indeed they are not working properly. But the only problem is that they give me 2 flashing lights (player 1 & player 2) when connected by USB. Wireless does not seem to work. Another drawback is that I can only use one of these controllers at a time - any other controllers with that problem won't be recognized.
Yet they are working generally - with the latest firmware PS3. That is what makes me curious. Were counterfeit controllers not banned since the firmware update? On the other hand, what enforces the thought of them being counterfeits, the internal life looks quite different from all other PS3 pads I have opened this far (3 DS, 1 Sixaxis).
This is what the fake?-Controllers look like:
1. The battery pack is blue instead of black, with no label on it. Additionally, it is glued to the mainboard.
2. the power cord of the battery is connected with the right side of the mainboard instead of the left side, like in the original PS3 pads.
3. the rumbles are connected with the back side of the mainboard instead of the front. See here:
I have read some of this report on fake PS3 controllers. Especially the video on the white PS3 pad partially confirms my controllers being fake. All of my fake?-Controllers have this barcode: 8518025011337
Thus the questions are:
Are these controllers fake?
How can I make the contollers work properly (wifi / more than 1 pad) ?
Tosnic, regarding the fake controllers, I think it's the related to the manner in which they connect to the PS3. I've seen multiple eBay listings (as I'm also on the look-out for a second controller) and a couple of those need to be connected via. USB cable and then can be used wirelessly.
I think the official controllers have some sort of software verification/special method of connection when they connect to the PS3, and all these counterfeit controllers don't have the required "code" to meet this verification/don't connect in the same way, which is why the PS3 rejects the connection. It's only a guess, but I guess that's how Sony managed to kill off so many of these controllers with just a software update.
I don't know about fake ones, but I noticed one interesting peculiarity of the real ones while they're not used much. I don't know why, but handles become literally WET (from the back side mainly) once you take it in hands for like 3-5 seconds or more. It's perfectly visible if you look at it. The effect wears after a few days of use. I checked 2 controllers that came with consoles and they both were like that. Now I don't know if it's a common effect of clean plastic, or they work them up with a special compound or something.
this is how real ps3 controllers work too.

Well, you could always ask the seller before you buy the controller wether they are fully functional with the latest firmware. Or you ask him straight away wether the controller is original. He should know where he bought it ;-)
