Could PS2 software emulated BC now be ported to newer consoles with recent fail0verflow discoveries? Or still a physical issue?

heya,
ok so now that the keys are out there and the ps3 is totally opened up, I'm just wondering where this may stand with backwards compatability for PS2 titles?
I own the 250gb Slim which obv has no support.
I know obv the older consoles where hardware based emulation, but then the consoles after that were software based emulation.
Now my question is, was the software emulation 100% software based, or was some part hardware still lurking inside which has since been removed?
Of course, in thinking that if it was 100% software based on those consoles, it could be a matter of copying those features now (resigning where needed) the ps2 BC?
Would love if thats the case and may happen in near future....as a few games I never got to play on the ps2 (kingdom hearts etc) and don't have room for another console to get a used ps2

answered by Sabin1981 in the geohot thread thats now been reopened
No PS3 has 100% software-emulation of the PS2; the later models removed the Emotion Engine CPU, but they still had the RSX Synthesiser GPU.
So nope not ever going to happen...doh!!
Thanks Sabin for confirming

I believe I've heard of a port of PCSX2 being developed, but I only read it up from somewhere else. I don't think it has been released yet and it may be a while before we get a solution for the slim.
And hi all btw, I'm new here.

Slightly off topic. but didn't Sony recently patent a piggyback device to add the PS2 hardware to the Ps3 externally................. not that they ever have intentions of releasing it.

this will be possible to do. math is currently playing with this idea and has got a game (cant remember which) working on a slim using ps2 emu like the old 80gbs
Xbox 360: LT+ Jasper - Freeboot 0.4 Jasper | PS3: Slim 250gb 3.41 Xplain - Phat 60gb 3.55 Geohot -Phat 60gb 3.15 | Nintendo Wii: 4.2 Pal Softmod | PSP: 5.50 Prometheus

Hmmm that would be awesome if successful.
I wonder though, how it would likely be possible if the RSX Synthesiser GPU is missing? Though I guess that so long as calls for that are translated into running on the ps3s gpu correctly, it may work (but then surely Sony would have done that too to cut more costs when they dropped full hardware support?)
edit....hmmm while googling "RSX Synthesiser GPU" according to wiki that IS the ps3 gpu? Maybe Sabin1981 meant some other chip?

God almighty... I always get those two bloody names mixed up. My apologies.
PS2 has the the Graphics Synthesiser (GPU) and the Emotion Engine (CPU), the PS3 originally shipped with both of those for full backwards compatibility - whereas later models removed the EE and kept the GS, resulting in drastically reduced compatibility. Then even later models removed the GS too, which lead to PS2 support being removed completely.
Sorry Midnight Tboy, I always get the GS and RSX names backwards
(oh and just Sabin is fine
)
@MRDOCA
Have you got a source to that info please, mate? I'd be very interested to follow Math's progress --- though we all know Math... he claims/teases he has information but never releases it, so even if it is true; he'll never release the PS2Emu because it could lead to piracy and backups >_>

Not to my knowledge :\ I've never seen any PS2 games for download from PSN, though there's plenty of PSP/PS1 games. Sony did put up the updated "PS2 Software" on there, but it was only the updated emulator allowing backwards compatibility for HW that supported it.

Yes, i read that too somewhere, but they were sitting on the side line "eating popcorn" and watch how the scene is developing first like higher firmware support before they jump on it.
Don't know who it was or even it was a few people or 1 cant be sure hopefully someone here might dig up that news article somewhere heh.
Oh and welcome

and I am sure he will tell us all about it 5 minutes after someone else does it
Excuse my scepticism but that seems to be his usual form.
Make sure you butter the non reflective side of your CD's / DVD's and Blu-Rays so that when you drop them, they land butter side down thus preventing scratches.
