It just came to me about the ps3, would it be cool to do a mod of upgrading the ps3 memory ram just to give it speed boost of relief. I know the system architecture is all in one solder in. But in recent years there are fans who have done mods of old consoles. Wouldn't there be some one who can do this crazy modification to the ps3 and run it soomthly. Only thought of this because of the psp upgrades of lil more memory ram than the original psp.

Hate to say it, but that would be incredibly difficult. The memory timing on the PS3 is very specific. You can't just drop in a stick of ram like you do on a PC.

you need to modify ps3 GameOS kernel, lv0 and north bridge firmware to read 256MB+ and change all DDR3 modules to same frequency of new ddr3 modules (sorry my bad english)

Change memory only hardly would be any benefit. Reasons are above.
SCPH-39001 v7 GH-022 NTSC U/C, Matrix Infinity v1.93 (installed by me), HDLoader v0.8c, Network Adapter, 500GB, SMS v2.9R4, VGA and GameLink 400 cables.

Well I dont have computer skills to do that type installion. The theory would be to grab some 1 or 3 gb memory chips into a custom ram socket and solder the joints where the main memory ram is located inside the ps3. I don't want to ruin an original 60 ps3. This is currently important to me at the moment, "my ps3 needs a big internal hard drive and liquid flux to keep the console cool. " If there was a way to mod new memory ram into ps3, then maybe i would attempt after the person succeded in doing so. There is crazy guy doing the psio for the orginal playstation no disc required.

Not an expert on the current PS3 scene.

But the basic issue here is due to the PS3 design, all of the memory is encrypted and most likely referred to by assembly (machine code).
Even if the physical memory was installed, clocked correctly etc.. The system wouldn't use it. It would probably fail to boot if it detected more memory than expected.
This is due to the design of Game OS which is essentially a heavily modified linux (to my understanding). All memory on the system is encrypted at the hardware level and mapped by hex address, So the upper limit of 0xXXXXXXXX would be called out in the programming and the software wouldnt even try to map anything to the upper (new) memory address range. I guess if you wrote an lv0 hack to allow homebrew etc to use it you could, but at that point the entire system would need to be compromised and understood, IE a perm CFW.

Secondly it would probably be pointless since the PS3 is not a PC and was never designed with high memory apps in mind. Basically the data gets streamed (think real time) through the memory and processor not cached and called say for running memory intensive programs IE: Desktop OS.
