First off I'm new to the forum and also a PS3 noob

So I came across a broken PS3 and bought it pretty cheap. Its a 60gb fat model. When I turn on the ps3 the power led goes green, then the system beeps 1 time, then the system shuts off. The system shuts off in about 1-2 seconds after I touch the power button. It doesn't sound like the fan runs, but I'm not positive about that. (I'm a PS3 noob.)
I tried powering the ps3 on without the HDD installed, but it still shut off right away.

The power LED never turns yellow.

I opened the PS3 and cleaned it out because there was a LOT of dust inside. I checked the connections and such and didn't notice anything wrong.

I was told it could possibly be the PSU, but I would like to know for sure if that's the problem before I order a new PSU.

Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

Its the YLOD mate, you need some flux and a heat gun.

look on youtube there are plenty of tutorials on how to fix it, chances are if its been like it a while it will have an old firmware on it and therefore be jailbreakable too

    good luck mate

    EDIT:

Sorry dude misread what you typed i read it as "the LED turns yellow", but if it IS the PSU then the same fix applies i think =]
    Ps3 60GB BC (upgraded to 160GB) 3.55 rebug

Thanks for the reply. I've been doing a lot of research and I haven't found a solid answer to my problem. Most people get a yellow LED and a few beeps from the system or red blinking LED.

When I plug in my PS3 the led is red since its in standby, then i push power LED goes green, system beeps 1x, system shuts off. I then have to flip the power switch off for a little bit to be able to power it on again.

I'll try to make a youtube video tonight.

I have to agree with vespalite YLOD,
This happened to my son's 80gb fat.
I didn't use any flux just the heat gun set to low.
    40 seconds per chip.
It is a really easy fix.

The hardest part is the rip-down and putting the PS3 back together.

I also used a PC power supply to power the PS3 up before I used the heat gun just to be sure it wasn't a faulty PSU. But it still had the 'beep' then power off.

His PS3 never had a solid yellow light it would blink yellow so quick that you could only really see it in the dark.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to heat gun it, but I figured that would be the suggested soultion. I don't really have the tools and space here at school so I'll probably find someone on craigslist to fix it.

If you don't have a heat gun you could always use a toaster oven. I had a stubborn ylod system on the weekend that I heat gunned 3 times but would not come back to life. In the end I stuck in my toaster oven for 8 min on 450 F, let it cool for about 45 min put it back together and it worked. Only thing that got melted was the annoying speaker, so no more beeps but oh well.

A heat gun at Lowes/Homedepot is around $30.
You only need to use it for about 3min, this will show no wear on the heat gun.
So, after you fix your PS3 you can just return the heat gun. None the wiser
This can be done on any flat surface the size of (or greater than) the PS3.
Not alot of space required to do this, not alot of skill needed either.

*Plus you get the GREAT satisfaction of fixing the PS3 yourself.
