Broken Bluray –
02-04-2011,03:35 AM
So, I just got a broken PS3 from a friend, but the Bluray drive doesn't work. I'm trying to narrow it down to bad logic board or just bad laser. From my research, it seems that if it's a bad board, then it won't run any packages or games. I don't have any PS3 games yet (just got the PS3 itself, wanted to make sure I can get it working first), so are there any downloadable packages I could try? It's on FW 3.30, which makes it tricky to sign a package myself to try.
Also, do PS2/PS1 games work to check the problem with the drive? Or will they not load with either problem? I checked with a DVD, and it did not load, but I don't know if that counts.
Thanks in advance!

Probably a bad laser mate. If its a 60GB model with the Card Reader it should be PS2 compatible

I know my system is PS2-compatible (it's a CECHA model), but will trying a PS2 game on it determine if it is a bad laser or just a completely messed up drive? Which will prove which?

I tried updating the system, by first going to BDB 3.55, and then BDB 3.55-kmeaw. Trying from the recovery mode doesn't work, though. I get an error 8002F2E6, which there is surprisingly little information available for. The only thing I could find was replacing the hard drive to fix it, which I don't have the money for. I already tried restoring the file system, and every other option in the recovery menu for restore/recover/rebuild/etc. I had this same error when going to BDB 3.55 non-kmeaw, but I got around it by updating through the XMB. But now that I'm at 3.55, I can't update from the XMB anymore, it says I'm already up to date.
1) Is there any way to install from XMB even though I'm already on 3.55 going to 3.55 kmeaw?
2) Is there any known way to get around error 8002F2E6 without buying a new hard drive?
I'm doing a full format of the hard drive right now, to see if that fixes the problem. It says it will take almost 4 hours, though. So, I hope it works.

The full update didn't work. Anyone have any ideas?

Theoretically, if only my laser was dead and not the whole drive, I should be able to install a normal, non-BDB CFW, is that correct? So if I can find some way on 3.55 BDB non-kmeaw to try to run a package, game, or demo, SOMEHOW, then if that works, then I should be able to update to a normal CFW through recovery mode...
If so, does anyone know how to check that without using BDB (which is failing me so far)?

I'm exactly the same problem as you. I've tried installing BDB Kmeaw and had the same error. I've tried the 8.0 Rogero, Multiman, and all the LV2 and nothing.

With the release of service mode for the PSP, I'm considering rigging up the PSP to downgrade my PS3 back down to 3.41 BDB. I'm not sure how well that will work, though. Has anyone downgraded to BDB before? At least I won't be worried about screwing my Bluray playback.
