Totally new to all this so sorry if anything is wrong. Got hold of a PS3 CECHA01 console with a broken blu ray and was planning to replace the drive at some point but somehow due to the kids they tried to update the firmware. It was orginally on 3.50 but my son tried to update to 3.55 via usb and ended up in a update loop. So I did some research and decided to format the hard drive and try firmware that doesn`t check the drive. After the format I get no screen output and after a minute or so the console shuts down. Tried getting into the recovery mode but nothing. Is the console trash now or can it be fixed?

    Thanks in advance.

Just a quick update. I can get in recovery mode due to the power button which is fixed. I can`t recovery anything as get a error or cannot access the hard drive. When I goto update firmware it just sits there and does nothing.

it looks like more as a HDD fail.
if you have a spare one you should try.
If not try to format the HDD from a windows machine.

Don't rush into installing the BDB FW, watch the update and check what % does it get stuck on, could just be a loose connection. But normally you can figure out what the problems is by how early or late the update stops, Google the hell out of it to see other peoples experience.

Otherwise nothing will load on the PS3 if it's BR drive is broken or bypassed, unless it's just the laser or internal gears.

That "serious error" is what you need to search for, it would give an 800**** number, also try going to recovery mode and install from there, you might have to format your HDD to NTFS in a PC first.

Chesh pointed out in a similar thread, try 3.50 and see if there's any difference. You just need to get it rolled back to what it was before the update loop.
