so yesterday I was casually browsing craigslist and came across an ad for a 60gb ps3, called the seller and agreed to check it out at his home. He said it was a 60gb model and was asking 250 for it with two sixaxis and 4 games, so for a 60gb model it seemed like a great deal. Anyway, got to his place and the thing just didn't look like a 60gb model(2 usb ports, no card reader). I told him right away it didn't look like a 60gb, so I asked him to hook it up to his tv to turn it on and see what it was, sure enough, it was a 40gb model. The guy appeared shocked, so I explained to him that the 60gb models are the ones that are worth more money because of the backward compatibility issue and told him that his 40gb model was not worth anywhere near 250. He asked how much it was worth or how much I would offer him, I told him the most I'd give him was 180, he agreed and I left with a 40gb ps3 and 2 sixaxis controllers. Got home and installed a spare 80gb hard drive I had pulled from my other ps3, then proceeded to update to fw 3.41, ftp'd Ratchet & Clank. The ps3 is working great, now I'm wondering if I should keep it as a second ps3 or if I should post it up for sale for 220 now that it has an 80gb hard drive and 3.41fw. What do you guys suggest?

Uhhh... how does adding an ancient 80Gb HDD and a fw upgrade make it worth 220? It's still a 40Gb model regardless...

Keep it. It is always good to have a spare, especially to test out some of these daily releases of Backup Managers and stuff. Or, give it as a gift- Christmas is coming up

because it's jailbreakable. The longer people hold on to PS3's that can be hacked, the more valuable they will become. Pretty soon most used PS3's will all have 3.42 or newer.

That being said, I like having 2 PS3's. You get the best of both worlds - continued access to PSN, and homebrew.

Sure maybe a couple years from now but the price doesn't just increase overnight. You can still get a brand new slim with 3.40 for 299.

Well, depending on the buyer, and what the buyer wants it for. Pretty soon all new slim ps3's sold will come with 3.42 or higher firmware. So somebody wanting a ps3 to run jailbreak stuff on it will be limited to the used market, and even then, limited to those that haven't upgraded to 3.42 or higher. Not to mention that where I live (California), ps3's sell for 200+ all day long. Gamestop was selling used 40gb ps3's for 250 + tax just a few weeks ago. So it doesn't seem all that unreasonable to ask 220 for an 80gb ps3 in good working order. I'll probably put it on craigslist, if it doesn't sell, then I might keep it. The thought of having a second ps3 to have one enabled for psn sounds good, but before I jailbroke my original ps3 I only played online like two times, and downloaded the "Tester" videos, that was all I did on psn. The other thing that worries me, is what if my primary ps3 gets the ylod? Having a second ps3 that can be jailbroken would be really handy. Kinda confused and undecided at this point.

Make that $330 for a new slim. If you live in a place with sales tax, the price automatically goes up $30. It really sucks.

Yeah, I'd definitely suggest hanging on to it for a while, especially if your only other PS3 is a fat model too with their poor reliability you never know when a BD laser might die, or worse.

As soon as I found out about JBing i saved up a bit for a new 320Gb slim, had no confidence at all in the old 40Gb lasting much longer.

I did some research on the 40gb models and it seems that the most common failure is the laser, but with replacement lasers going for $40 on ebay, it's not so much of an issue. I'd change the laser in no time if it were necessary. The only thing that makes me nervous about ps3's is the ylod issue, but it seems like even the slims get it, so maybe I shouldn't even worry. One thing that I did notice about this 40gb model is that it gets MUCH hotter than my 80gb model, not sure what that's about. Maybe I should open it up and give it a good cleaning. When I removed the original hard drive, it was all dusty and covered in lint, maybe the heatsinks/fan are dirty.
