    Hello all,

I have a friend of mine that wanted me to look at her 80 gig PS3 (original model with the memory card slots under the cover) that is having trouble reading discs. Since I repaired several PS2s and Xboxes (both kinds) for her I agreed to take a look at it.

It has the characteristics of a weak laser. It will read discs for a bit, then you will hear it trying and trying to track and then it gives up.

Has anyone here replaced a blu ray laser lens to correct this symptom before? Do you think my diagnosis is correct? The rails are clean and lubed properly as well as the worm gear. Also the lens is clean as well.

I would be interested in hearing what y'all have to say.

    Many thanks,

    Hoyt

I have repaired at least 30-40 PS3's it seems after 1-1.5 years the laser just goes...no rhyme or reason. There is NO pot on the laser to adjust (which I found VERY strange) It normally will stop reading all discs.

Just replace it, laser is about $62 on ebay.

I noted the same thing - needed a new lens. This would explain the missing pot. divineo also carries new lens.. a few different types.. not sure if they are cheaper than ebay or not.

My PS3 did the same thing as hers, at 9 months old. Luckily I had my receipt and got it replaced by Sony free of charge.

And yeah, it just went out. And I do think it was just dust though. Because the only game I really play is High Velocity Bowling..which plays from the hard drive.

It bakes the dirt on the lense? Hardcore... Perhaps if you used the same thing they use to clean telescope's mirrors when they get a spec of dust on them... *investigates*
