    Hello,

So my cousin's PS3 has a problem. He doesn't know exactly when it appeared, but he has some clues.

First let me tell you what the problem is. Whenever he inserts a game in the PS3 it doesn't appear in XMB. The disc goes in the PS3, but nothing happens.

He thinks that this appeared after a system update.

Now... what could he do... sorry to give so little details, but I'm new to PS3... just got one a few days ago. I do know plenty about the PS2 scene, but on the PS3 almost nothing.

I searched the version of his PS3, but I don't know if is right, because is a little different from the SCPH-XXXXXX PS2 versions.

His version is CECH-04 from what I could find.

If there is any other information I should give you, please tell me.

    Thanks!

    Console: PlayStation 2 v12
    Chip: Modbo 760 FW: v1.93
    Apps: uLaunchELF v4.40, Simple Media System v 2.9 R4, Open PlayStation 2 Loader v0.5

9 times out of 10 it is the Blu-Ray laser, that dies, they are like a lightblub, after a limited number of hours (around 2 years if you use your machine everday), they burn out.

Cost to replace at most good repair shops is like $100 to $120, cost to repair at Sony is about $225, cost to repair itself is hit and miss, buying a laser on ebay that may or may not work very well, but cost is only around $60.

If your friend thinks it was an "update" problem, you can go into the "recovery menu", via holding down the power button twice over (first time it shutdowns, next time release finger when it beeps twice).

Then pick the option "restore file system", and this will restore the key files used to talk to the blu-ray drive, but I only see that help in 1 out of 10 machines.

Quick question Gary, about this person's issue.

Since he is using a non US version of the PS3 (not sure which country 04 is, assuming Aussie or Euro) do you know if there is going to be any difference at all in the laser? I assume no, but I've seen some odd things when combining parts from more than one country in the past.

Nope, the lasers are all the same, either KES-400 (single-eye) or KES-410 (dual-eye) or KES-450 (slim-lens).

    Cool, one final question.

Do you know if the two slim power supplies are interchangable? One of the biggest issues I'm seeing with the slim is power surges (according to the customer). Right now we don't have enough good power supplies to keep them going out the door (and sadly, the fuses are not blowing which could be a fire hazard). I haven't mix and matched the slim power supplies just yet, so was wondering.

Yep, that is one problem with the slim, as it is always on, power is always running thru the unit, no switch to cut off the main ac at the back like the old PHAT models.

There should be an "AMP" rating stamped in the plastic, if it is the same or higher it can be switched, but if the "working" unit has an LOWER "AMP" rating, then you can't replace it in the dead system that has a burned out "HIGHER" rated version.

The PHAT models are little more complex, as they changed the "AMP" rating and also the front panel wiring harness, from five, to four, then finally to three.

I always kept the power switch on the back on my old fattie, but unlike what I assume most of the power surge issues I see, I used a real surge protector, instead of just plugging it straight into a wall (which is stupid) or plugging it into a power strip (which a lot of people mistake for a surge protector).

    Hi...

Sorry for this late reply, but I'm very busy with work.

So When the PS3 was on, I turned it off, then I pushed the button to turn it on and hold it until it beeped 2, but I didn't had any recovery mode menu... It appeared what kind of display I want and then it goes to the normal XMB.

    What am I doing wrong?

If you are using real old firmware, then it doesn't have recovery mode.

But what you do, flip the switch on on the back, press and hold the power button until it turns itself on and then back off, then press and hold it again until you get two beeps back to back (about half a second between beeps) and it should go into the recovery menu.

Still doesn't work... He's FW is 3.40 so is very new... I don't know what I am doin wrog, but when I turn it on and I wait for the two beeps there is like a second a a half between them. The PS3 just goes to the normal XMB after it tells me if I want to use the HDMI connection (the PS3 is connected through a HDMI cable to the TV).

Is there any other way I can enter recovery mode? Or I have another question... if chose Restore PS3 default or someting like that from XMB isn't it the same? I know it deletes all the data on the HDD but at this point he doesn't care.
