Auto Resume feature no working on videos from HDD? New PS3.

With the 360 I have the option to resume the AVI movie once selected from the list.

With the PS3 sometimes it works, most times it does not, ( specially if I turn the PS3 off and remove the external HDD) making me start the video from the start..
This is my first PS3 and I might not be familiar with the proper way to go about this. Resuming the video is very important for me because of lack of time to watch a whole flick sometimes.

Also, if anyone knows, when switching to some apps, like Netflix, the screen goes blue - no signal - for a second or two..
, very annoying .. is that normal?
