Am I done ? –
01-18-2011,01:22 PM
Hello,
This is an orignal 40gb system that I just put in a new 320gb harddrive, that appeared to fomat fine.
I was looking over the methods to downgrade from 3.55 back to 3.41, I put them on a USB stick. I upgraded my hardrive to a 320gb and when I put it in it told me to put a 3.55 upgrade in and by mistake I put in one with the 3.41 upgrade(well downgrade). It took it but, after a reboot, it's now bricked.
WHen I put the power on, it goes green for a second, it blinks yellow once and just flashes red till I hit the power button again. I get no video. I tried the HOLD (to listen for 3 beeps to get into upgrade mode) the power button but, it does nothing (just beeps once and starts blinking red). I can get to the "fan mode" by holding power/eject but, then it just goes red till I hit the power switch.
I tried the service mode USB stick (Lv2diag.self) and nothing worked. I even tried to use my TP2 as a dongle and I can't get into service mode. Everything I have found is unsucessfull. WHen I hit the power button (to hold or anything else), it turns green for a second, then yellow for a split second, then just blinks red.
I've been reading here over 3 weeks now and this was a mistake on my end by putting in the wrong USB stick.
Can someone help me get my beloved PS3 working agian. Or am I just done (AKA; Dump and buy a new system that I don't have $$ for right now) ??
Thanks in advance.

Try taking your HDD out and formatting it in your PC, or use the original HDD that came with the console (assuming you still have it).

I tried that, after this problem, I put in the orginal 40gb drive and tried a few of the steps with that, same result.

Can't find a way to get into it. Power switch and holding the power toggle switch does nothing accept for beep once and green, yellow then just goes to a blinking red.
Is there a trick to it ? I assume power switch on, then hold the button till you hear the beeps (what I saw on youtube videos), still nothing.
Any way to force it to take a update to reflash 3.55 (at this point don't care about modding, just want to be able to play my owned games from disc)or any other ideas ?

That sounds like the YLOD (yellow light of death). It's a hardware issue and you can't get to recovery mode or service mode when it's like that. I'd try the hairdryer method to fix it (search on youtube) first, and if it comes back to life then you can backup your saves and stuff. Then dump it and get a new PS3

Thanks, why would it go to this problem after a flash ? It was working perfectly then I upgraded the HDed put a 3.41 flash in by mistake and now it's doing this.
I have a 360 that went to red ring of death that I fixed (redoing the CPU heat sink).
If I have to pull it apart and put some freash goop on the CPU heat sink, NP but, what a pain in the ass...
It looks like a 20 min project to see if it will boot again (hairdrier fix), maybe I'll try that for the hell of it, I know it's not a perm fix but, if I can get it booting again and back to 3.55, it should work for a while, I can't afford a new one now, so No PS3, no PS3 games.

The Hair Dryer thing did not work. 20 min with a hot dryer directly in the vents in the back, the PS3 was in a box, so heat did not escape. Let it cool off for over an hour till it was cool to the touch, plugged it back in. Same thing.
Is it possable to reflash if I can't get in recovery mode and with the ylod symtoms or am I done with this ?
Edit: Been reading about the YLOD on the PS3, maybe it is that, not sure but, it could be. So, I am trying to conact someone who has a heat gun to try to do it right (maybe be a perm fix, like I did with my 360).
Still not 100% sure this is the issue but, it could be. Anyone else with ideas ?

I tried the Heat gun method, No luck.
Power toggle button gets to Green, Amber for a sec, then a blinking red. If I do the fan test(eject and power when turning on), the fan will come on loud, it will show a blue light but, after about a min, it will just go to a blinking light. At no point I can get into recoery mode.
Could someone confirm, with these symtoms that I am not bricked and that it's a YLOD ?

This is how bricks happen... Or by trusting people like waninkoko
If you don't already know how to unbrick the PS3, the chances of you doing it had the tools been provided are slim to none. Google something like nor flasher or infectus. There's also soldering involved I believe
And lol at the hairdryer suggestion. A heat gun, okay, even an oven works, but you're not going to reflow shit with an ordinary hairdryer.

I used a heat gun at 750f so and held it to it for 45 seconds each. No luck.
Tried it again with the CPU goop...no go...
Edit: I gave up after 3 times pulling the whole thing apart and trying everything, no go, I guess the PS3 is a piece of junk. Even the RROD on the 360 was an easy fix (well, not for a noob) and 3 months later it's still running perfect.
Just got a few games over the holiday, I just opend but, never played (sucks, I was looking forward to playing). I'm out of work, so money is really tight, unless I can find a PS3 with a bad drive or something for really cheap, I won't be visiting this site any more for a while...
Man, this really sucks...
Thanks for everyones help here...
