60GB Fat PS3 Help Please
60GB Fat PS3 Help Please –
I'm sorry if this thread is in the wrong section & I'm sorry that I'm a total noob to the PS3 modding scene after all this time but I really need help. Yesterday I successfully reflowed my YLOD PS3, I know it's just a temp fix & I need a reball but it was my first ever attempt at reflowing, so PLEASE don't burst my bubble LOL. Since my PS3 has been sitting here for like almost 2 years my PS3 is very much exploitable because it is all the way down at 3.30 firmware. I'm not sure what to do next because a long time ago I bought a original jailbreak from ebay but I'm not sure if it's real or fake & I'm not sure if the jailbreak method is even still used as a way to mod the PS3. I also have a 16gb usb drive that I can use to CFW it but should I chance updating all the way to 3.55? If anyone knows what method I should use can you please help or let me know what you would do if you were in my position. Also I know that to add games I need a internal or external hard drive, so I chose the internal hard drive route. I know that the hard drive must be a 2.5" Sata drive with a 5400 RPM but I heard that the most the PS3 will recognize as an internal is 640gb & I wasn't sure if it were true or not.
I originally understood that the PS3's internal drive was limited to 2TB, due to filesystem limitations, but I could be wrong.
I only have a kitchen because it came with the house.
thank you so much for you're response, I really appreciate you're help but I have to be sure what's the guaranteed maximum limit that I can install in the PS3 because I don't want to buy a 2.5" sata drive that is not compatible.
I think that 2TB is the max but it doesn't matter since the biggest you can get are 1TB it has to be SATA 2.5 9mm, and most HDD above 1TB are 12mm so it wont fit into the casing unless you intend to mod the casing itself.
BTW 7200RPM will work as well i have 640gb 7200rpm inside my slim.
As for CFW there are 2 choices either 3.41OFW with Cobra dongle with it you can load PSX/PS2(BC only)/PS3 games from HDD/USB or 3.55KMEAW where you can only load PS3 games via Backup manager, as for how to do it search the god damn forum.
the largest capacity 2.5in sata that will "easily" mount into a ps3 is a 750Gb, i believe. a 1Tb would fit, but with some case modification for the 12.5mm height drives. the 9mm drives are supposed to debut sometime this year. pretty much ANY 2.5in sata will work, if you can fit it. thinking about price, the 640Gb or 750Gb is relatively cheap nowadays....
To be honest i would wait a couple days and keep an eye on the QA flag threads. With all the QA flag stuff going on who knows what they will find shortly. If you decide not to wait and flash/jailbreak the system, i would use a variation of the 3.55 custom firmware. Either KMEAW, Rebug or MFW-maker. Before you use either one please search these forums for the instructions to properly flash (KMEAW) or make your own Custom firmware using MFW maker. Rebug enables some debug options. However if you don't require debug options in your firmware it might not be your cup of tea. DO NOT UPDATE THE SYSTEM FIRMWARE PAST 3.55. It breaks Homebrew, backups etc. The one thing to bear in mind is that custom firmware and PSN do not and in my opinion, should not go together.
If you use a CFW on your PS3 then you shouldn't use PSN on that PS3 (use a second unit for it). If you absolutely have to have PSN and don't have/wont get a second PS3, then maybe flashing your PS3 isn't the best thing for you. As far as the hard drive goes you can use an internal drive up to 2 terabytes, storage wise, its the physical size of the drive that will make it or break it. External hard drive's should work, in any capacity as far as i know. Just make sure the externals are formatted as a fat 32 drive. If you search the forums most of your questions can be answered, before you have to ask them, or even knew you had to ask them in the first place. Hope i helped. Enjoy...

i tried a couple of 1.5TB hdds at first myself ages ago and the ps3 wouldn't format them, the forum i was on at the time every1 was saying that 1TB was the internal limit they where saying they tried 2TB, so i went with the 1TB myself in the end as 1.5TB didn't work. i'm fairly sure 1TB is the limit internally though but i could be wrong, but as people said before theres no limit externally, Oh and you will lose 11% of your space that the ps3 automatically save for its filesystems i lost 103GB on a 932GB drive
1tb max on fat systems. If you dont want the YLOD coming back on you I would look up one of the maney fan mods out there so that you can get plenty of air flow to keep the system cool. Also look up on ebay ps3 copper shims I know a guy who sells them really cheap but takes forever to ship. With the extra copper and a fan mod chances of YLOD comming back are very low.
Thank you so much for everyone's help, I really appreciate it. I'm not worried about PSN because I don't go or play online at all. I'll go with the 1tb internal hard drive if that's the max I can use on my fat system without having to do any case mods to it. From my searching around here & using goggle & other sites like ******, I've gotten numerous suggestions with going with CFW 3.41 or 3.55 but nobody seems to explain fully the differences between the two or which one is better.... As far as cooling my system I'm gonna get it reballed & water cooled but I wanted to have it modded before anything stupid happens & it gets updated past 3.55
a 1Tb will fit in a launch 60Gb with significant modifications because of how the hdd caddy is designed in it, unless you hold out for the 9.5mm 1Tb 2.5in sata that is supposed to debut later this year. current 1Tb 2.5in sata are 12.5mm tall and will NOT fit without modification. also, as far as i know, both fat & slim ps3 have the SAME hdd acceptance - the fat will take use hdd that the slim can use.
about custom firmwares, v3.55 will give you better game compatibility over v3.41 with less eboot mods. in short, easier to backup games, ability to play later released games, no loss of function over v3.41. seems like a no-brainer to me
