4.30 Firmware breaks PS3

First, I hope I am in the correct forum.

Has anyone also had the experience of the YLOD after the 4.30 firmware update? My PS3 encountered the YLOD after I updated it the Saturday before Halloween with the latest firmware, which was 4.30. It successfully downloaded and installed the software. I then started the browser and signed onto Pandora so I could have music for my party. Approximately 2 minutes later the unit froze. After waiting about 5 minutes, I decided to force a reboot by holding in the power button on the front. It then started its boot process and went through its disc check. I was able to get it back on after that for about 15 seconds....then it shut down by itself with the YLOD. I cannot believe this firmware update killed it. I'm way out of warranty but have kept it 99% dust free and sat on my entertainment system by itself vertically with plenty of space all around it for great airflow.

Current PS3 Config:
PS3 40 gig (upgraded to 320 GB HDD)
Using HDMI for video output
Using the Optical digital out for audio
Manufactured Nov 2007
Repaired once under warranty in 2008 for not being able to read discs. (another note: it sent in with a pristine outer case and got it back all scratched up -- Sony didn't want to take any responsibility for it)

I am currently disassembling the unit and attempting to fix it. I'll going to try using a heat gun for the solder connections and then use better thermal compound.

I doubt the 4.30 firmware update had anything to do with your YLOD problem. The YLOD typically comes from problems with the GPU, and since it looks like your PS3 was an older phat model, I would say it was just waiting to happen. I also had a 40 GB phat CECHL04 model that got the YLOD. I would suggest sending it to someone that can reball the machine. A reflow might work for a few weeks, but it will not fix the problem. A good reball with leaded solder would be the best solution, either that or buy yourself another PS3. Sorry for your loss.

YLOD has nothing to do with 4.30. It was going to happen sooner or later anyways. Luckily it's entirely possible to fix it

Yeah I guess it was a really odd coincidence. I was able to fix it with a heat gun it seems. I'm now laying it in the horizontal position hoping it will last for a while longer. Thanks for the posts guys. I'll have to look into that reballing thing.
