[HELP!] Broken PS3 needing fixed
[HELP!] Broken PS3 needing fixed –
I understand I'm a new member here, but I have been lurking around these forums for awhile to help understand more about the ps3 I traded for, and now I have some problems I need help with..
I traded for a broken PS3 off craigslist (just for the hell of it) and I'm trying to fix it. I've fixed numerous Xbox 360's before and would consider myself pretty tech savvy, so here's the problem..
When you turn it on it goes green for a second, flashes yellow once, then beeps 3 times and starts blinking red. YLOD people say. Anyhow, the owner before me said that it used to boot on for a few minutes before it would shut off, but it hasnt booted on for me once of my 100000 tries.
Anyhow, PS3's dont really have error codes I guess so I don't really know what to do. I fully took apart the PS3 and replaced the thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5 and heated it up with a hair blower (living the thug life, I know) and put it back together and it still doesn't work. I figured it's just overheating so I'd replace the thermal paste, but I guess maybe that's not the problem??
Anyone who can help me fix this will be rewarded as I would really like to try and get this thing running!!
YLOD = broken solder points under the CPU/GPU 99,9% of the time. You need a heatgun, not a hair dryer (and heatgun is only temporary fix, reball is best but you need high-end tools for that).
Yep, you'll want to reflow it. A hair dryer will NOT work. Don't try it. You can get a heat gun for <$50. If you don't want to spend the money on a heat gun, then just resell the ps3, because you won't be able to fix it.
Why not simply get new parts for it, like new heatsinks, fan controllers, CPU and GPU, then try and fix it up with those, if you try the heat gun method, you will probably run into the same problem again after a while. try this site out it may give you some if not a lot of help
lol Are you sure you've fixed 360s before? To get rid of that YLOD once and for all you'll need
Heat gun ($20) *or you can just stuff the motherboard in the oven for 6 minutes*
Flux pen ($10) *NOT lead-free, that's what causes problems to begin with*
Thermal compound ($10) *NOT Arctic Silver 5, it takes too long to cure*
So you can mod the fan while you're at it, get:
Wire stripper ($5)
200K linear potentiometer ($3)
Soldering iron kit and heat shrink ($10) *I skipped it and just used electrical tape*
