Hello Everyone. Lately i found out that existed two versions of Linux Kit.

1."PS2 Linux Beta Release 1"--which was released in Japan in June of 2001year. Its privilege is that it was released on single DVD-disk (RTE and Linux itself combined together), so when installing it--user did not have to replace disks during

installation. Also such "PS2 Linux Beta Release 1" could work on Devkit Unit DTL-T10000.

It was based on Kondara MNU/Linux ---Japanese version of Red Hat 5.2 - 6.

"PS2 Linux Beta Release 1" had Linux Kernel ----kernel-2.2.1_ps2-6 which could be replaced for 2.2.21 , 2.2.26, 2.4.17 mvl afterwards. Though a lot of people think that kernel-2.2.1_ps2-6 is too outdated ---it could perfectly define

majority of different manufacturers peripherals including usb-keyboards and usb-mice.

Only approximately 8000 users could try "PS2 Linux Beta Release 1" and report any bugs to the developer of the Distribution. Some customers also reported that it had problems with displaying in VGA-mode with monitors which supported SOG..

"PS2 Linux Beta Release 1" DVD was supplied with "SCPH-10270 K"-units. Full installation (Custom Install) of "PS2 Linux Beta Release 1" which included Gnome and KDE Desktop Environments required to install 653 packages, occupied on

HDD 1667 MB of Disk space and person had to spend 2 hours of time in front of its PS2.

And WindowMaker installation required to install 375 packeges, occupied on HDD 770MB and person had to spend something like 50 minutes in front of its PS2.

After one year , developer of Linux Kit decided to issue new version.

    2. "Linux (for PlayStation 2 ) Release 1.0"---second generation of PS2 Linux. Release was issued in April in Japan, and in May of 2002 year in USA and Europe. Probably developer improved product based on customers reported bugs. Also

developer decided to split Linux Kit in two parts (Two DVDs).

First DVD contained RTE(RunTimeEnvironment), second one --Linux distribution itself which got GPL Licence. A lot of people were not happy by such decision of developer, because constantly replace DVD-disks in DVD-Rom drive is not for

people with weak nerve system..But what actually they could do about it?

Customers who previously bought "SCPH-10270 K"-units with "PS2 Linux Beta Release 1" --were freely given "Linux (for PlayStation 2 ) Release 1.0"--so they could upgrade to newer version of Linux and use it everyday.

I remember Linux Kit was expensive those days. Also there was lack of information about developers intentions.

I have questions to the community:

Is there someone out there who tried both versions of Lnux Kit----"PS2 Linux Beta Release 1" and "Linux (for PlayStation 2 ) Release 1.0"--??????

What do you personally think---which version is better ??????

Does word "BETA" present in "PS2 Linux Beta Release 1" ----necessarily mean that it is not the final product and can have a lot of bugs ??????

    Do you like Linux kit??????

If you do have Linux Kit----what are you using it for?????

Does Linux Kit have a decent web-browser ?????
