    I'm considering upgrading my system Perl, but I wanted to see what your experiences have been. Newer Pidgins rely on Perl 5.8.1 or higher. Since a lot of applications rely on Perl, at least during the building stage, I wanted to know if any of you have experienced any problems with apps or your system following a Perl upgrade. I don't need to go too high, probably something akin to deba5er's Perl 5.8.9 package.

    @Isles487

    My compiles work fine (so far) with Perl 5.8.9. Note that you may have to manually link (ln -s) to allow scripts which call "perl5" or "perl5.x" instead of "perl" to run.

    Thanks. I realized that, like any other source compile, since it by default installs to /usr/local, it won't affect the system Perl installation. Thanks about the linking tip. To compile perl, I had to create a link named "cc" to point to gcc, since Perl tries to call "cc" when it compiles. This is a problem with very few pieces of software.

    Would like to add that upgrading to Perl 5.8.9 causes no problems. Works flawlessly.
