Hi! I have installed Sony's PS2 Linux on my Playstation 2, and to boot it up I need to have Disk 1 inserted.
How can I boot linux up without having the disk in the drive?

I tried using kernal loader, and on the default settings linux DOES boot up, but with an error, and it can't finish booting as thus is not usable.

    Can anyone help me?
    thank you.

Why don't you use the RTE from Sony?
If I remember correctly, atleast one of both Sony-RTE-Versions could be started from other devices than CDVD.

i am using the rte from sony, as far as i know..
it is a back up, so it won't boot from the disk. so, i want a way to load it.
you can't load it via an esr patched disk, since it 'messes stuff up' with the linux disk.
i could boot it via swap magic, but i would have to do this every time, and it i could make my ps2 autoboot the kernelloader, which in turn autoboots linux, i would be happy

i have version 1.00 as far as i know.
the boot loader/kernel(?) is installed to the memory card with official sony linux, as far as i know, but it needs the disk inserted to load the thing up to allow it to boot from the memory card. i don't know why it installs stuff to the memory card if the disk is has to be in the drive...

anyway, i have gotten further, but it still dosen't boot completely

Why would you load it from disc anyway, if you are not permitted to it (or are you?!)?

so, i want a way to load it.
    What about 'Free MC Boot'?

you can't load it via an esr patched disk, since it 'messes stuff up' with the linux disk.
Yes, ESR and a Linux-RTE (regardless if the Sony-RTE, or kernel-loader) are incompatible to each other (because of various reasons).

i could boot it via swap magic, but i would have to do this every time,
Why? Are you dependent on the boot-up of 'Swap Magic'?

Btw.: Which PS2-Version do you have?

and it i could make my ps2 autoboot the kernelloader, which in turn autoboots linux, i would be happy
Then just boot the Sony-RTE-ELF from MC and/or USB...

i have version 1.00 as far as i know.
    ...of what?
    Linux? The Sony-RTE? Kernel-Loader? What?

the boot loader/kernel(?) is installed to the memory card with official sony linux, as far as i know,
Nope, as far as I know it only installs the kernel into the BWLINUX-Folder (and maybe other stuff too, [but] not the RTE-ELF.

but it needs the disk inserted to load the thing up to allow it to boot from the memory card. i don't know why it installs stuff to the memory card if the disk is has to be in the drive...
    You might ask Sony, why...
It's not the first crazy decision of them...

anyway, i have gotten further, but it still dosen't boot completely
Maybe you should add some more info here.

    i have fmcb, fat ps2.
and yes, you need to have the disk in to boot ps2 linux (the way sony want you to).\
i have been talking to mega man about using kernal loader, and i am certain i will be able to do it that method
if there is a rte elf somewhere, tell me where it is

I'm (relative) sure one of both Sony-RTE-ELFs (either the one from Sony's PS2-Linux, or the one from BlackRhino, or CERF4) does work from MC only!

...and yes, they are different byte-wise and the ID-Code (SLUS/SLES/...) is also different...

The 'SLUS/PBPX/...', or however the file is called on this linux-discs, is an 'ELF'.
Every native executable for the PS2 is an ELF, or am I wrong?

You can use one of these files (either the one on the Sony-Disc, or the one on the Blackrhino or CERF4-disc...) on MC, afaik...

You are completely right. Those files are elfs--it is just sony renamed them to its own names(SLUS-SLES ) and so on..
