Only 10 bucks and my pride. I got another 39001 complete for 10 bucks after posting an ad on craigs list for broken fatties. Doesn't read CDs, but the drive tray works, and reads DVDs, not that I need a drive anyways. Still need a new NA, but some gamestops like 30 miles away have some used in stock for 15 bucks.

The first time it happened I could have fixed it, had I noticed it before removing and reinserting it again, which broke the pins.
So, now V7#2 does the HDD duties while my faithful (bought new) V7#1 becomes a DVD drive only PS2, just how sony intended it. of course, I'm working on a way to fix the broken pin, I have it figured out, even a new wire in place, just gotta solder it to the original pin and shape it. Unfortunatly, its very soft copper, unlike what was in there before, so its a one shot deal, PS2 linux HDD in, and it stays there. Actually, since I had chopped up ATA wires, I used a single wire from my 80 wire left overs, its not braided like the 40 wire cables, so it's the perfect size, just soft.
And, as always, theres something to learn. I now know what section of the NA port handles HDD stuff, as the NA worked fine, however HDL, SMS, uLE, etc would either say the HD wasn't installed, or would hang trying to read from it, depending on what pins I had messed with. After I replace my NA, I may look into this further if anyone cares.
Merry Christmas from the McNicholas family in Arizona.
