Today I started this new thread in order to find solution to still undecided problem not only by me but I am sure by majority of other Linux Users.
I am already fighting long time and want to achieve my goal-----”Install Linux to Shared Folder “ on my PC----and still no luck.
I went to Deba5er web-site start [PS2] and downloaded all necessary files:
From Kernelloader - Browse /Linux 2.4/Linux 2.4.17 Kernel at SourceForge.net
downloaded necessary kernel and Kloader:
Placed files to mc0:/kloader and to mass0: ----- and before edited them 100 times accordingly to my Home Network.
Why it is not possible to load initrd.usb2.smb.gz on Kernelloader | Download Kernelloader software for free at SourceForge.net ?
Also why is not possible to load ps2linux_loop.7z and swapfile.7z on Kernelloader | Download Kernelloader software for free at SourceForge.net ? May be it is better to place them there and also post there instruction what those files are and how properly use them?
Will tell you truthfully I already got tired to play with it—because does not matter what am I doing---
result is always the same-----”No Linux Through SMB”.
I will tell this----We need to find better solution. Look at OPL. With OPL to run Games through SMB is very simple. You just input necessary IP of PC and PS2 and some other info---and all is done. Simple.
Why cant we do the same with Linux?
Here is how OPL configuration looks:
Very Simple to install.
But with Linux we have bunch of files---and nowhere is explained how to properly to configure it.
Guys I am not criticizing anybody---I just want to find solution.
Life is simple. We do not have to make it more difficult than it actually is.
Look at “Apple—MAC Computers”--they are simple in design—and it brings success to its developers.
The reason why I want to install SMB---I afraid that Lens of my PS2 Slim can very quickly die---and I do not like that it all the time makes noise during it reads some files and loads them to memory from LiveDVD.
I am not against LiveDVD –I even like it –but I want to run my Linux through Network Share---more comfortable to me and I am sure to majority of other people. If installation process to run Linux trough SMB would be more easier—I would even buy a NFS. But you see the problem is that configure SMB for Linux is very difficult for average PS2 User.
We need here – “ UNIFICATION”.
We do not have to configure SMB for Linux like it was before.
Kloader 2.4 must be responsible for “Configuration of SMB”.
Kloader must provide Linux Kernel with everything Linux Kernel needs including info for SMB Linux Start.
I think that new version of Kloader must have in Menu such Entry----”Network(SMB) Configuration”.
The same way as it looks in OPL or maybe a little bit changed.
You go there and input all the necessary information--( IP of PS2 and PC or Router, //Network PC Name/ Folder –in which we have loop and swap, port , maybe user and password—and thats it).
I do not know where Kloader must save this information—probably to mc0:/kloader/config.txt .
But I think that we have to simplify for average PS2 user SMB installation of BlackRhino Linux. This is for sure. Lets be honest –most all of us have PS2 Slim. And to my opinion SMB is the best solution for PS2 Slim—because 100Mbit/sec –is not a joke---it serious speed guys.
And also is there anything better and quicker for PS2 Slim? I am sure 100% that LAN is the quickest interface and the only PS2 Slim has.
So our priority in Kloader must be LAN.
Kloader must get new “Features”. It has to be changed. Kloader should have in Menu option to choose in which way you want to start Linux through Kloader------USB-Start--LiveDVD-Start----and the most important----LAN(SMB)LinuxStart.
For example I decided that I want always to run Linux on my PS2 through LAN(SMB) Only.
So what do I do in next Kloader?
I go in Kloader to ”Network(SMB) Configuration” and input all the necessary information.
Kloader saves it to mc0:/kloader/config.txt ----I also input there that I want it to autostart LAN(SMB) each time I start Kloader. And thats it –everything is configured.
Also I think that Kloader must have Virtual Keyboard in Menu. Each time I try to use usual keyboard –
Kloader does not recognize it. I have to have ability with my gamepad to use Virtual Keyboard to change Kernel Parameters and some other info. Virtual Keaboard would be very nice to have in Kloader.
Look at other homebrews like OPL—with gamepad you can change anything---also UlauchELF has Virtual Keyboard. So why Kloader cant have one also?
Also I think that there is some problem in Kloader when outputting VGA signal. I do not say that its not outputting at all, it just when I start VGA through GSMode Selector—then Kloader looks properly,
but if to turn on VGA through Kloader itself—then somehow I cant see all the menu of Kloader and it is difficult to choose what I want. Like menu cant fit in my Monitor. I think some research has to be done here.
I think that Kloader must have new option in MENU called “Videooutput Settings”.
I could there choose different resolutions and type signals.(PAL-NTSC-DTV-480/576p, 720p, 1080i, VGA—640*480p(60/70/75/85HZ)--800*600p(60/70/75/85Hz)--1024*768p(60/70/75Hz)--1280*1024p(60/75Hz)..
I know It is now possible to change it through L2 R2 buttons---but I think that if Kloader could have “Entry in Menu” for such purpose---would be a lot better for the average PS2 User.
Guys please make SMB installation in Next Kloader AS simple AS in OPL.
A lot of PS2 Users Would be very happy and appreciative .
I can not wait till the moment when it will come true. Please merge all the scripts and instructions which are necessary to be executed in Kloader for SMB Linux to be Started.
I am sure 100% that it is time for changes to take place.
Please make the life of average PS2 Slim User who wants to run Linux through SMB a lot easier.
Guys I am and all community counting on you.
